eh I'm not done yet, if it was just a swap then I would have been done long ago. Check out v8s10.org and even s10forum.com People can do the swap in a weekend. It all depends on how far you want to go with it.

i think they make kits so it bolts in.....
jegs has alot of parts for the swap.
iirc, jagsthatrun.com or something like that has alot of info on the swap.
blazinlow.com also has a short run down on it also.

Supercharged RS has it all. You'll also have to take into consideration, Is it 4WD or 2, AT or MT? You can use most of the stock parts from the drivetrain, minus the tranny of course (you might need an output shaft if your truck is 4WD). Due to the extra 170+ lbs, you might want to think about a new set of shocks (stiffer) and some tinkering with the torsion bars to bring the front back up to it's stock height. So your result is gaining a total of anywhere between 200 to just under 300 lbs depending on what your adding and which SBC you use. A bigger rear end should also be in store if you plan to burn your tires a bit or even tow heavy loads. Look into a 7.625 or 8.5 rear end if this is your case. You, a buddy and case of beer should be able to complete it in a weekends time if the parts are readily available and you have the drive to complete the task. They sure are fun though.
There really isn't a difference under normal driving if you stiffen the suspension. The only thing you should notice is that it's louder. Give it WOT and it's as different as night and day. The rest depends on whether you plan to run it like a daily driver or street/strip truck. Good luck with the build!

Decent power, cheap, and a light aluminum block/heads. Shouldn't end up weighin much more than the iron v6 it would replace.
