anyone know what exactly a Catalytic Converter does? and if it has anything to do with making SMOG...

i live in cali.... probly has dif smog laws

I believe it filters C2O and other poisonous gasses

as the exhaust passes through the catalytic converter, they cause a chemical reaction which turns many of the harmful emmisions into less harmful ones. it turns carbon monoxide (caused by incomplete combustion) into carbon DIoxide, hydrocarbons become carbon dioxide and water, and nitrogen oxides become nitrogen and water. In Cali, they have some of the tougher Smog laws.

catalytic converters smell really bad too never get behind a car that has one when your going up a hill thats some nasty ****........

that could be the engine burning any sort of fluids...
transmission fluid, oil, etc

A catalytic converter that is in need of replacement will sometimes emit a sulphur (rotten egg) smell.

And yes - it is pretty nasty.

thx for the help im asking because i might be comin up on a 92 teg and i guess it needs a CC to meet smog and to clear its salvage title.

grab a hi flo aftermarket cat... mst of them will still keep you under your emmissions, will be far less expensive, and even give you a hair more power

i had the problem with passign emisions and they kept saying that it was the catalac converter but we checked all the sensors and just happened that a 42 dollar sensor was out and then it passed

i even have 2 cats under my car, takes away so much power from the car
