What the CRAP can I do with an Explorer 4.0?

I own an explorer 4.0, yes. I don't want to disrupt my emissions levels or tweak my engine so that it dies within another 5,000 miles. Right now I got 145,000 on it, so she's getting close to finished. Can I drop a new air filter or a cold air intake or something in there that will give it some giddy-up, yet not empty my bill fold nor make my exhaust blue? Any suggestions are welcome, except ford haters. I've had enough of them.

A cold air intake is always a good addition. I have a 3.0 in a Ranger, and there is a lot you can do with it.

Easiest thing to do without disrupting emissions:

    Let the engine breathe better!

Cold Air Intake- IE - K&N Filter- cold air pipe

Free Flowing Cat- Back Exhaust. Have a look at www.summitracing.com

They have a few options available for your truck. Otherwise- custom make your own. I believe that the stock exhaust on your Explorer is either 2 or 2 1/4 in diameter. Upgading to a dual exauhst of the same diameter- or preferably larger (2 1/2 - 3") would open things up quite a bit.

Both of these options would easily give you a noticable ammount more HP and efficiency.

At 145,000 - she isnt ready to go.

    Just getting broken in!

    take it easy,

You can get them about everywhere...including Wal-Mart. They are a bit pricey though.

that's a big negatory... I'll probably have to get an engine rebuild in another 25 or 30,000 miles anyways

Well there is the obligatory K&N filter, but i could not find one for an older explorer. So you're on your own for that one. And Flowmaster makes a cat-back exhaust system that dynoed 15 extra HP and 23 ft.-lbs of torque. It's $160.

The best thing for you to do is order yourself some Jeg's and Summit catalogs. They're full of cool stuff.
