    96 Blazer-- 2 18's budget build

Budget is $2400. System goal is to slam on music and have the end result look extremely clean.

    Equipment:
    2x 18" HDC3's SoundQubed
2x 2200 watt amps Sound Qubed
    50' Cadence 0 gauge
    2x C&D g31 batteries
    Pioneer 8400 deck

    Box:
    10-11 ft^3 @ 35 Hz
4x 6" hand made flared ports
    back seats stay in
box built within vehicle due to its prohibitively large size
    designed with a pencil and a TI-89

Side panel was in the way so it was cut out. Carpet will be used to cover this up.

Starting of the box. Everything at this point is just with screws.

The port flares will be cut using a 1.5" radius roundover bit.

Three layers of wood were glued up, which will soon be cut using the above bit. They will be used for the internal and external flares for the ports. 6" PVC will be used as the port tubes.

C&D batteries model UPS12-370R. They were benched at about 1000 amps cranking and were $80 each from the local interstate distributor. At a later date a new alternator and front battery will be installed.

The equipment arrives soon and I expect to have this build completed by the end of next week.

**** you know car audio is getting crazy when $2400 is a budget build. Should get pretty loud and that roundover bit is pretty sweet.

Routed out the internal flares today. The 1.5" radius roundover bit worked well to create the large flares. Even with a 2 H.P. router it was struggling.

The other side is inset to accommodate the 6" PVC.

What did that 1.5" roundover bit set you back?

    Re: 96 Blazer-- 2 18's budget build

The entire bracket to hold the jack was removed to provide more room for the box. Carpet was also added. The exposed metal shown below will be covered by the box.

Today we also experimented with different paints to use on the flared ports. Since this is the internal set of flares, anything we do to will not be seen from the outside. Red seemed to turn out the best.

The box will take up the entire width. Cardboard was used to create a template.

Work was done on the box design. Shown is a side view, with the left being towards the rear of the vehicle. The calculated volume is approximately 12.3 ft^3 before port displacement. Once sub displacement is known, a more refined calculation of the volume will be done, which is needed to calculate the port length.

The reason for the 45 degree slant of the back of the box is to reduce turbulent flow. Since sudden changes in area are a source for turbulent flow (and energy is lost in turbulent flow), the slant works by gradually changing the area. This is only a theory. One that makes complete sense after taking fluid dynamics, but has yet to be tested in this application.

The side pieces were replaced. Internal volume was too small so the sides were made wider.

The back panel was cut and the fit was verified before it is glued up.

One battery will be on each side in pockets. The fit is very snug to fit the amps on top of the box and to maximize space for the subs. we originally were trying to fit 3 or 4 batteries, but that would kick the space below 10 ft^3 for the subs.

The most difficult part has yet to be made. It would of been nice to have a copy of SolidWorks for this project.

For the record everyone it's actually a 1999 Brazzer (Bravada clip). Tonight the rear piece was slabbed up. Tomorrow we cut out the flares.

Today the rear piece for the box was cut out.

Flares were made and the PVC tubes were glued in.

The box size is about 10.2 ft^3, with the ports being 21.5" long. The PVC were bondoed in, followed by a layer of glazing putty (as shown in pink).

    Re: 96 Blazer-- 2 18's budget build

    Test fit:

    The fit is perfect.

There is 5.5" between port and the back hatch. Enough room for port to be breath, yet close enough to load off the back hatch.

    Equipment came in:

New amps are taller than the old ones. New one shown on left. Older model on right. Amp rack will need to be slightly lower now.

Work will continue after this weekend. The build should be finished next week.
