bmw e46 - hybrid audio, zapco, fi

    the car: '05 325xi

the mains: hybrid audio technologies legatia 6 special edition + legatia pro 1 r2

the sub: fi car audio ib3 18"

    the amps: zapco dc reference dc500.1 (x2), dc350.2, dc750.2

    --------------------------------------------------------------

exploring uncharted territory with the kick panel/crush zone in this car... as far as i have seen, everyone has been too chicken to cut into the metal here. understandable, but after discussing the option with a fellow bmw master technician friend, i am comfortable that structural integrity of the vehicle is not compromised with this surgery.

the idea is to mount the legatia 6 se drivers in the kick location - the space is definitely there.

explored the space some w/ an installer friend's scope...couldn't see much due to excess metal. decided to do some exploratory cutting anyway.

glad we did! found the cavity needed with lots of airspace venting into the framerails & fender area.

honestly, i'll bet 8.5s would fit!

a layered baffle approach will be made for the woofer. here is the template:

the sub will be fired through the ski pass behind the arm rest in the rear seats.

these cars are a blessing when it comes to an infinite baffle subwoofer installation for this reason - the non-folding rear seats cars have a solid metal wall behind the seats w/ an opening for the ski pass. i simply sealed up the underside of the rear deck with a layer of second skin damplifier pro, and now the trunk will be completely isolated from the cabin.

a baffle will be made to mount the fi ib3 18" subwoofer up to the ski pass something like this:

the amps will be loaded into the spare tire well something like this.

and finally, i will leave you with a picture of the most beautiful tweeters on the planet!

more to come when there's more to show...

    cheers!
    - ben

got some more work done on the pass side...

1/2" baltic birch x2, laminated together w/ wood glue.

this will become the first layer of the baffle.

now w/ the speaker hole cut and attached to the car...

to this i am adhering the second layer of the baffle, another 1/2" birch baffle. this one will be decoupled from the first layer via a sealant adhering method. the speaker will be screwed to this baffle with screws that only penetrate this baffle.

applied dampening over the entire finished baffle. over top of that went a layer of overkill pro. these help further decouple the driver.

and now w/ the "real" camera...

    glove box reinstalled...

this shows the footwell - almost zero reduction of foot/leg room.

VERY happy w/ how this has turned out - time to start on the driver's side!

...then off to my pro install buddy broadfield for the finish work. i know my limitations!
