I'm right there with brynm, did it look like the subs have been mounted before? Or hooked up before? Maybe they were just DOA? Either way, the seller fails for abandoning you like that. I'd be doing everything I could to make sure my buyer is happy and my name is in the clear.
You should hit up TCSounds about it, see about the warranty. You can give them his paypal addy to check for records if he is the original owner.

Didn't notice any but I don't kno how they could have gotten so hot.... First time I powered them it was less then 30 seconds I've only powered them all together for maybe 2 and a half minutes... Coil was never ever warm to the touch
Wow, Trancer seemed like a legit dude from all the times I talked to him.

How much did you pay for it?
If he knew why wouldn't he have contacted PE? I'm still thinking it was an honest mistake. If he shipped you the subs having never hooked up power as he claims he likely did not know there was an issue. He should work with you more than you have said he is though, not denying that.
Also not saying you are, but it's happened before where the buyer has received the item beat on it and then claimed they never hooked power up until now and all of a sudden there's an issue. This has happened to reputable sellers with tons of transactions. Maybe there was a weak spot in the glue/epoxy that let go once there was stress put on to it.
