Need opinions on a bad transaction...

I bought an amp from a guy on here a few days ago, just received it today. The first thing I did when I got it was opened it up to take a look at the guts...well one of the components has all three of it's legs broken and the one next to it has at least one leg broken. I don't know what to call it so I'll just call it a "mosfet" because it's in that style package, but it's actually a diode. It reads FMU 34R. Not sure where to go from here, I've never had anything like this happen before. So what's fair? Should I pay for return shipping? Should he have to? Does he refund my entire payment including shipping? Like I said, something like this has never happened to me before so I don't really know what a fair deal is...

Here's a few pics. It's really hard to see it because it's so **** small, tough to get the detail I need with my ****** digi cam. The one on the right has all 3 legs broken, the one on the left has at least it's far left leg broken.

    Re: What's fair?

well I will say this, I sold an alpine 9886 to a guy on here and it was damaged in shipping due to my inproper packaging and I refunded the whole amount plus enough to cover shipping back to me. so after that being said, I would want the entire amount plus enough cash to cover shipping back to him.

Yeah that would be nice...I just don't want to be a **** about it and like demand my money plus enough for return shipping, but at the same time, idk if it was damaged during shipping or before hand, but in either case I paid full price for a broken amp. Usually when I sell something I consider it still my responsibility until the buyer receives it, intact.

I dont know too much about amp internals, but did the seller claim the amp was working? Also, you said first thing you did was open it up, did you test it to see if it works at all?

Yes it was sold to me as a 100% working amplifier. I'm not going to attempt to power it man, that would be pretty stupid. If it was just a mechanical failure (i.e. the legs broke during shipping) powering it up right now could cause an electrical failure and destroy other components.

Well he's being pretty cool about the situation, seems like a nice guy, and also seems like he may be a little hard up for cash right now. He agreed to refund me what I paid (including the initial shipping) so I'm just going to cover the return shipping. It's not a really heavy amp so I doubt it will run me more than like $20 or so :P

Re: Need opinions on a bad transaction...

I bought a pristine looking Orion HCCA 250 from a seller on eBay, and when I took it out of the box something was rattling around inside. It turned out to be a capacitor that appeared to be a replacement, because the solder job was not very good on the the back of the board and it just plain came off. The guy said he would give me a full refund if I wanted or he would pay to have it fixed if I would ship it to a repair place he used, he would pay the repair bill and return shipping. So I did that option.

I think most sellers will work with you if you are diplomatic in your conversation with them and don't jump down their throat with the accusatory finger.
