What can be used in place of MDF???

Can 3/4 plywood be used??? I can buy 1/2 and quarter sheets of plywood but not MDF and I don't need anywhere near a whole sheet. I am just making rings for a fiberglass box.

Plywood breaks apart. If you're using good/powerful subwoofers, it won't last very long.

When was the last time you tried to drill a screw into the edge of a piece of plywood?

<and after i read the whole post>

I think that you'd be good with making rings out of whatever you wanna do.

you can use plywood for what you want to do. Hell before MDF we always made out boxes out of plywood but 500 watts was alot back then too ;) rings just need to be strong enough to support the weight of the speakers plywood will do fine.

Just about any solid wood will work, pine, birch especially, even oak if you want that kind of look to it. It's the stuff that's not solid like chipboard and plywood you need to watch out for.

I've always thought it would be awsome to do a box out of walnut or something. I dont have the money though.
