Hey guys,

I made an enclosure for my 12" sony xplod sub. Right now, there is a 1 inch diameter hole in the back where my speaker wire comes through.

Do I need to make any more holes in the box?

Am I hurting my sub with the way I have it now, with just a 1" hole.

What are some quick fixes that I could do to make things better.

well you kinda need to make a BIGGER hole, and actually put a port in it. That will involve building a new box though... A hole in the box is NOT considered a port. Also, you will need to run those wires through a terminal cup, not a hole because the box will not be airtight and will sound bad.

That's not a port, that's a cup holder.

oh i thought a port was just a hole in the back, so what exactly is a port.

...so what exactly is a port.

Like a parking lot for boats. This should probably be in the Box Building forum ehh? Do a search for box building. :thumbupw:

a port is a tunnel for air in the box to pass through, in kindergarten terms. Basically its not just a 2-d hole on a box, it has length, width, and depth.

but is what i am doing right now really bad? i mean, is it really worth me going through all the extra effort, it sounds pretty good right now?

Some of my friends say it wont make that big a difference and i should just leave it alone. what do you guys think?

If it sounds good to you keep it that way.

It is robbing you of output and putting your sub in serious danger most likely. Depending one enclosure size it may be tuned quite high and youa re way below tuning most of the time. Take the 25 minutes to glue the correctlength of pvc pipe in there and I can nearly guarantee you'll bemuch happier.

if ur friend says it wont make much of a difference than i think he needs to lay off the bong. it would make a difference if u seal it off or make it a real port. u would be much happier

You might be better off just sealing it up with a terminal cup from Radio shack. Porting an enclosure takes tike and skill and some calculations and you really should not rush it. I'd seal it up and start making a new good ported box when you have plenty of time and skill.
