Something like that would be a good starting choice...push/pull 6BQ5's, all you need is a good preamp and decently efficient speakers at 8ohms to pair with 'em.

those are soo cool. good old 12ax7's those were so widely used along with the 6al6's iirc. i love the warm glow of the tubes too. i have a pair of bogen tube amps somewhere. i hope my dad didnt sell or ditch them......

****...that auction is still way too low...I might bid on it, because those rectifiers are worth more than what they're going for now :)

my first tube amps, were amps taken out of old sterios. i found that the realy big ol tube sterios, (like the ones with, 12''s 15''s, record players, TVs, and multi-band radios) usually contain a tube amp seprate frm everything else. the tube amp portion of the sterio (if seprate from radio portion) can be removed and simply wired as a regular amp. i have found these old hudge sterios at gradge sales and antique shops from $10 to $50. the amps comming out of the sterios usually are 3 channel, but if ya can two alike sterios that contain mono amps, ya can phase them and get a nice 50 watt amp, (potentally worth $500+ if ya do it right). if ya dont know much about wireing them bring the amp to a shop, get the caps replaced, new tubes, phased or what ever else needed.

Heh, that was pretty intelligible for a drunken post. Yeah, 6L6 are beam power tetrodes...but IMO, 6BQ5/EL84-based amps have the potential to sound better :)

my first tube amps, were amps taken out of old sterios.

The amps that I posted the link for were taken out of Hammond organs - I know there's a guy over on SIN that has a tweaked-to-hell 6BQ5 SE stage that he pulled out of a Magnavox console and built all sorts of custom things for it. Surplus amps can sound really good by themselves...
