First ill start off saying that i fired the sub up, and i hated it. So i had to make sure that the sub was something i really wanted. Imade a 2 cube sealed for it that i absolutely loved. So now it's time for the project.

Frst, the problem.

Fitting this big bastard in a box, that is 3 inches smaller than the outer diameter of the sub

http://img107.exs.cx/img107/8112/12ek.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

its 11 inches deep, But ill get to that later.

first i designed the box. its 3.2 cubes net with 34.5 inches of port area firing to the right tuned to 25 HZ.

http://img48.exs.cx/img48/3568/23iy.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

then i added mdf rings on to the front. i used 2 rings on the front. one is a flush mount, and the other is a sub mount ring. i also cut the front baffle in 2 pieces so i could make everything fit.
http://img217.exs.cx/img217/5692/37ha.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

Yes, that is a hole in the top of the box. This is back to the sub being 11 inches deep. all the way back to the motor structure would be hitting the top of the box without the hole cut......plus it looks better.
http://img217.exs.cx/img217/97/42ah.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

of course all the screws holing the mounting rings to the front/top of the box are countersunk. the reason it is 3/4 inch bigger on the bottom is because it screws into the bottom of the enclosure.- i also added weatherstripping to the sub mount ring, just to ensure an air tight seal between the sub and the screws.

http://img207.exs.cx/img207/1752/57ul.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

You gotta know that Fiberglassing is involved. i cut the rings at the bottom, to fit with the bottom of the box, because i needed to squeeze out every inch. A dodge neon trunk isnt very big.

20Hz is considered to be the threshold of human hearing limits. but each person is different and varies slightly. but 20Hz is what is common in most people.

yea... 25hz tune means the sub ONLY PLAYS 25hz... hrm...

it'll probably peak somewhere between 30 and 35.

Alot of noobs trying to design boxes nowadays eh?

Btw, firing the port like that wasn't a great idea :(

It should give a nice gain by actually turned the box around (if it'll fit) so that the port fires to the left and the sub fires forward... otherwise having the port that far away from the rear of the trunk will def hurt spl.

do you concider a noob some one with a post count of 200 or less? or someone who just doesnt know all that much about nuthin at all. Because alot of so called noob's are not exactly noob's. Some of them have been arround the block actually taking care of business them selfs rather then talking on this site. If you have been on this site for two years, and have worked with car audio for that time alone, vs. someone who has been on this site for two weeks and been involved with custom car audio for 12 years... I mean who is the noob then? what is the deciding factor you concider a noob to be?

and dont forget, you can reinforce the UNDERSIDE of the fiberglass too. IMO - i wouldnt have even put a single layer on the outside of the box for ease of use when you have access to the other side. but thats just me.

Technically we can hear to 20Hz...in HT systems it's common to tune very low (20-25Hz) because that maximizes the "impact" of the deep subbass that we can feel. Because ported boxes lose output rapidly below tuning, tuning very low takes advantage of this.

It isn't as common in cars because of cabin gain...

more hue pics

this one is of a light coat of bondo on the fiberglass part, and the beginning of concealing the screwholes

http://img23.exs.cx/img23/4097/133qw.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

then we have a close up of the wood putty. My mom told me to use it, and i like it. its quick drying than bondo. u just need to use 2 layers

http://img23.exs.cx/img23/2214/144jy.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

not bad, needs sanding though. So does this.....

http://img23.exs.cx/img23/6973/165yv.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

different angle (shot of the day)
http://img23.exs.cx/img23/9310/174vt.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)
they definately need sanding......

off to other things. after sading the crap out of a section, just to test it out and make sure paint was the way i wanted to go, i laid down about 6 coats of primer, both on the side and the panel, and this is what i came up with.......its also got 3 layers of clearcoat on it...

please tell me you will be giving it more power in the future -_-

bondo is an art. so good luck with it. its so much eaiser to just do it and learn than to try all sorts of crap that people suggest. you will get the hang of it.

bcarpenterfhl
03-31-2005, 01:56 PM
if you plan on painting this, i'd recommend inversting in some spot putty made by Bondo. Bondo often gets tiny pin holes caused by air, and when you sand them away, another one shows up. Even if you use a good sealer/filler primer, it's still helpful to have. once again, excellent work.
