ive got the alpine 9831... just installed it yesterday
though im still on my LOC til my RCAs show up... and
im not sure i got the right HU...

first off... what i really dont like about the alpine is that
its kind of a pain in the *** to use... the tilt feature has
no good viewing angles, the text scrolling and dot matrix
is hard to read. searching mp3 discs is cumbersome. and
so far i dont even think it sounds good.

i got it at circuit city so im not stuck... i was looking at
the pioneer p80 which is more costly but would it be
worth it? i know a lot of people here are starting to
go against alpine. i bought this HU for its ipod adapter
but really i dont even know if its worth it since searching
7000 songs is gonna be a royal pain in the butt...

anyone recommend any HU's no more than $400 that
might play nice with the ipod and be better than my 9831?

thanks.
geoff.

From personal experience, I can tell you if it pisses you off this early, go ahead and take it back. If it bothers you on the first week, it will irritate you everytime you turn it on in the future and probably get worse as time goes on. Take it back while you can, get something you enjoy.

my stinger bullet cable should be here either today or tomorrow
so im not going to take it back til i at least try it set up "correctly"
being able to use the subwoofer level and not just have the
rears tapped should get me a better sub response...

ill have to see... but anyone recommend any other decent 400$ HUs
that have great SQ and might be ipod compatible...

yes my friend has an eclipse, the best sounding HU i have ever heard, but most eclipses arent that good to look at, but if visual appearance means little, go for the eclipse

substance over style....NOT style over substance.... Is this Caraudio forum?
or Posers-r-us?j/k

g3offr3y...great decks- not sure about the Ipod ready stuff, but I'm sure an auxillary input can used

My experience with Eclipse decks(4 of them over a decade) lead to this:

Best sounding decks I had used(until I got the RF 8250)
They sound great right out of the box without much(if any) tweaking.

they are quite easy to use imo. the pro mode is also nice on them. you can bandpass your mids, at about any frequencies you want, and different slopes, 10 band parametric eq that you can adjust 5 mid band and 5 high bands. TA is also easy to use. only thing i don't like about is you can't mute the sub. doesn't really offer the greatest sub controls.

I would definately go with Eclipse. iPod through the AUX input and for a better deck youll end up spending less for a higher line 5 series like the 5435.

get a 9835 or a 9855

the biolite screen is perfect for viewing at angles and in direct sunlight

I have the 9833 and i havn't had any problems finding songs on a wma or mp3 cd. I also really like the ability to set up the eq, tc, and so many other items. My g/f has the pioneer dfh-7600mp. I don't really like the pioneer because it seems like there are a lot less adjustments that you can make and the quality just doesn't seem as good to me. I finally had a little trouble trying to read my display with a tilt on it. the sun was shinning right in my eyes. I adjusted the tilt and this took care of it until the sun moved. I have never tried a Eclipse but from what I hear around here they seem to be pretty good. If i were to go for another alpine i would try to get the 9835 because there are a few things besides the screen difference of the 9833 and the 9835.
