View Full Version : Where to put the xovers?

I have an 84 300ZX that I am installing a set of component speaker in. The problem is that the kick panels and under the dash is so crammed that I can not put the xover anyplace. I will be installing an amp under the passenger's seat and the comps are in the front doors. Does anyone have any ideas where I can put the crossovers. What about near the amp? But I will have to run two sets of speaker wires to the dirvers and I don't know if I will pick up more noise...

I wouldn't put them in the door, at least not mine, water gets in there and would destroy them. Under the dash?

In the glovebox.

Most folks say not it the door because of water and the slamming of the doors. This is where mine are or course.
Also if you like to change the settings etc you would need better access, unless you enjoy taking off door panels.

Some people have them in their trunk. I'm still wondering where I'm going to put mine.

What's the downside of trunk-mounting?

Further distance from the crossover to the speaker, some say that makes a difference because of the added resistance of the wire. But I say, that resistance is basically like what 0.1-0.2 ohms? Nothing when you have a speaker changing impedance all the time.

Buttload more wire is needed (since you are now making two runs of speaker wire per side from the xover, rather than a single run on both sides to the crossover).

I trunk mounted the xover in my last comp set. PITA runnin' the wire, but that is all I could say bad about it.

i showed mines off cuz theyre pretty :D had to buy twice the wiring tho, but its not like wiring is expensive (especially in comparison to the other crap you buy for ur system). u can also mount it on your leg, but that might hurt and u'd have to detach the wires every time u leave the car. who needs to leave the car when your music sounds so good tho?

when i had my cdts i did the xovers under the amp rack. those xovers are U.G.L.Y but if your look nice show em off put em on the amp rack or somewhere you can see em

If you have room I'd put them under the same seat where your amp is located. You may have a long run from xover to speaker but you'll have a short run from your amp to your xovers. :)

I put mine in the door and I've seen lots of others done the same and nothing wrong with them.
