View Full Version : New guy needs help on selecting Speakers

I have a 84 300ZX that use 6 1/2" speakers in the front doors. I want to use a pair of component 6 1/2" speakers and tweeter in this location. I have heard the MB Quarts and JL Audio component systems and prefer the JL Audios. I am also interested in the Boston Acoustics and Diamond and whatever else that may fit. I can not audition all of them so I have to rely upon everone elses opinion. I use tube equipment at home so I do not like fatiguing high pitched speakers but prefer ones that show some emotion (if that is possible in car speakers). I will be using an Alpine head unit.
I don't have a lot of knowledge on what is out there so I would appreciate some help.

How much are you looking to spend?

Also will they be amped or ran from the alpine???

I would like to keep the cost below $300.00 and I will be putting an amp in.

You have a lot of options for that price range. Right now RE has some comps on sale for one more day. CDT, JL, Alpine, MB Quart... They all have nice speakers. If you do have any of these near you check them out. Your ears are your best option. Unless you are willing to go off of hear say.

RE = Resonant Engineering.
Comps are $129 shipped untill tomorrow.
A search also would have yielded the same results:)

thanks for the link. The problem is I am going to have to go off hearsay abit. Where I live there is more coyotes than stereo stores and the few stores that are around have a limited number of different brands.

You are right...I did a search and came up with the information. Thanks anyway.

There are plenty of good audio stores in Albuquerque. Hudson's on Menual has excellent brands. Go in there and listen. They stock focal and some other good speakers.
CDT EFCFi's are hard to beat for the $200 price range. Not harsh at all like JL/MB speakers. Very good speakers.

Hudson's is a good store but they stopped carrying car stereo equipment awhile back. What I have heard, that I have on my short list is the Boston SL 60 and the JL Audio XR650-CSi component sets. Of course I heard them at two different locations so it is hard to compare. Any feedback on these two or something better?

I've heard all of those, and would go with a set of CDT CFEFi's over either. Friend had a set of JL XRs, and hours after hearing the CDTs was swapping them out and never looked back. In fact, he bought 2 more sets of CDTs for his other cars.
Boston makes my ears bleed. They are harsh.

Thanks for the great pointer about the HD-63. I will do some research...they look promising. Is there a web dealer that you would recommend that carries them? I listen to a lot of Jazz, how would these compare with the JL speakers that your friend pulled out?
