Ok, so I am going to be getting my front-channel speakers in the near future and I was wondering if I should go with the DLS Iridium 6.3 OR...go balls-to-the-walls, get the 8.3s, fiberglass the doorpanel and fi the monsters in?

I wil be getting the DLS Iridium 3-way set- either way...there is no changing my mind in that. But is the 8" really that much better than the 6"? (They will be feeding off of an Arc XXK-4150 so power will not be a problem :up2somet: )

i always like to go balls to the wall. go with the 8's.

I think the 6.3/8.3's are just a waste. You dont need the 3 ways.
The 8.2's are just dandy

Yeah, I was thinking the 8's as well...plus at a mere 2.75" mounting depth, well...that's just HOT. bUT...Why do you think the 3's would be a waste?

(Not that I know...hence why I'm asking! :p: )

The 8.3's would obviously be better--if you can fit 'em. If not, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 6.3's.

Don't listen to him....he doesn't know what he's talking about ;)

LOL

But seriously, 3-ways have their advantages, as do 2-ways. It just depends on what you are looking for. If you want 3-ways, don't let someone tell ya there a waste, because they're not.....but to some, the advantages aren't worth it. To others, it is. Just depends on whether you wipe with your right hand or left hand ;)

Oh, yeah....go balls-to-the-wall :thumbupw:

So what specific advantage/disadvantage(s) does a 3-way setup offer over a 2-way?

So what specific advantage/disadvantage(s) does a 3-way setup offer over a 2-way?

General advantages of a 3-way:

1) The midrange frequencies (which are generally the most important to imaging and tonality) aren't being split up between drivers like they sometimes are in a 2-way setup. In a 3-way, they will be played by mainly one speaker, which is the dedicated midrange.

2) In a lot of cars, the mids will need to be flipped out of phase to help correct some midrange frequency phasing problems. In a 2-way system where one speaker plays midrange & midbass, running one of them out of phase will decrease the midbass impact. By running a 3-way, the midrange can be flipped out of phase and it has no effect on the midbass since it is being played by a separate driver.

3) The midrange and midbass frequencies in a 3-way may sound better since each speaker has more of a limited bandwidth to play.

Disadvantages:

1) Tuning and aiming the speakers can be a much bigger pain the a$$.

2) Room. It can be much more difficult find the room to fit all of the speakers. In some cars, kickpanels are simply out of the question.

That's a general overview.

Ah, that hit the nail RIGHT on the head! Yes, that does sound like more work althought I think that it might be worth it.

Just out of curiosity, how do you "Flip something out of phase"?

Reverse the wiring;

Instead of wiring the speaker to the crossover positive to positive and negative to negative, you wire it up positive output on the crossover to negative on the speaker and negative outputon the crossover to positive on the speaker.

Crossover..................Speaker
Output
(+)................................(-)

(-).................................(+)

That's what I thought it was. I think I am going to go with the 8.3s, then. If it's all about the front soundstage, then hell - let's make it about the front soundstage! Thanks for your help...I'll be sure to post some pics when I hop on this during the summer.

As far as imaging with a 3 way is concerned would'nt it be easier to setup? Is'nt midbass non directional leaving only the midrange and tweet to image? Do I have it all wrong again?
