View Full Version : Why does everyone bash Sony headunits?

01-19-2005, 07:30 PM
After browsing this forum for a while it seems like the general consensus is that Alpine/Clarion/Eclipse are the only decks worth buying. I'm planning on getting this Sony HU:

I'm going with this one because I think it looks good, offers all the features I'm looking for (mp3, xm compatible, etc), and it's relatively inexpensive. Does anyone else think the "stealth" style HU's look much, much better than the traditional style with all of the knobs and buttons visible?

So what exactly is the problem with Sony HU's? Would it not sound as good as an equivalently-priced Alpine? Are there any great features that I'd be missing out on?

I have a sony head-unit in my truck, Its not nearly as expensive as that one looks, but I like mine.

I'm going to show off my nooby side.
I honestly don't know whats so bad about Sony cd players.
I kept my stock HU so I havent done a lot of research on headunits so I shouldnt be answering this at all.
I think they are pretty equivalent, but I also agree with Pioneer and Alpine HUs being the best bang for the buck when it comes to features.

Just my two cents.

I think it's mostly hearsay or bandwagons that people post their comments on.

Sony used to have a very high end line that were considered competition material called the ES line. That line was dropped 3 years ago, and was replaced what is now called Xplod. Today's line is nothing compared in sound quality, reliability, and performance wise as the ES line. I work at a shop and I honestly can say the HU's don't have that many problems as their amps, subs, and speakers do. They have pretty horrendous QA in that department.

i just cant stand flashy screens and useless stuff on most headunits. all the pioneers around my town that people have are all the same. flip down face, animations of racecars, dolphins and scuba divers. one even caught fire. i like plain and simple headunits that are built to just perform, thats why i chose alpine. but too i think a lot has to do w/ the fact i hate audio equipment that is built that looks like its only for show *caugh* audiobahn *cough* but pioneer does make good products. as jmac said pioneer does rank higher thn clarion here.

01-19-2005, 07:59 PM
i love my new pioneer, its not their highest line, but it "gets it done", it beats my old jvc kdlx-111......

We bash Sonys speakers, amps, and subs more than their HUs. There's also the fact that for the money you're spending on the Sony, you could be spending it on something we consider better.

i usually just hate the layout and usability of the sony HU's my freind has one and the rmote is eisier to use than the deck, so he velcroed it to his consle and just uses that, i have a heck of a time using that thing, it doesnt event have station preset buttons

Nothing wrong with Sony Mobile ES series decks...other than that, too flashy for me.

things like you can not find an easy way 2 put aux input even though you have bus inputs

anyway thats my problem with my Sony HU all the other brands have a fix for abt 10 $20 and sony way will cost 100

01-19-2005, 10:02 PM
I've seen a lot of Sony screens go out over the last few years ...

BTW, the ES line was dropped in 2001 ... It's now 2005 ;)
i'd listen to people such as this man before i made any rational decisions about headunits. that is the whole point of this forum so that people that have experienced the good and the bad can save people like me and u from making expensive mistakes ;)

The HU that I posted pictures of (CDX-M8805x) has aux-inputs. For pretty much any brand, the more inexpensive HU's won't come with these inputs.

By the way, does anyone here own a Sony CDX-M8800/M8805x or CDX-M9900/M9905x? If so, I'd be really curious to hear what you think.

01-22-2005, 07:48 PM
i have the m8805x...its ok....the fearures are ok and it plays fine....nothing bad to say except the motorized face makes alot of noise as well as when you put in or take out a cd...

I used to have a sony, only reason i dont have it now is because my car got totalled and the insurance company wouldnt give it back. I liked it, good features for the price, and pretty reliable.

My brother had two sony h/u along with a buddy of his. All the same model the first one my brother had went out after just a few weeks of owning. Took it back and replaced it with same model. Lasted for about a year and the internal amplifier went out on it. The third didnt have any problems to my knowledge. I dont like sony for the luck my brother had with his. Not sure the model but they were in the price range of over $200 at CC when bought new.

I had a sony HU.. it was awesome. High quality sound (same one you have there, except older model), and nifty design. Friends LOVED seeing it flip down and then the flat screen. Didn't like the fact that you can't take the face plates off, but hey. O well! My problem occured when the strip that connects the faceplate to the stereo got pinched and then fried.

01-23-2005, 03:00 AM
i dont like sony becasue they dont seem to last. my firend had an older sony xplod and teh faceplate broke off. then he got the newer version of it, and i jus thought it was ugly. but thas jus my 2 cents

01-23-2005, 03:26 AM
Because, other than the Mobile_ES line (long time ago)... sony car audio ***** ***. Friend had a sony in 2003 (mp3 compatible CD-player), it's a piece of ****. Other than that, most other companies offer better in the price range now-a-days.

My preference for HU's go as follows:
CLOSE CLOSE second Eclipse

entry level cd players sony isnt too good mid line and up they are ok, alot of people swear by alpine i had worse luck with them than anything. all i can say is you get what you pay for and anything can go bad.

01-23-2005, 01:00 PM
a lot of sonys have a cheap plasticky feel. some are ok. i have a couple friends running sony w/o problems. i just wouldnt get one though, it's seriously the newb thing to do since all newbs think sony is the best electronics maker to ever have been established on this planet

01-23-2005, 04:40 PM
I dont bash them, just in my experience many of them have had skipping problems

01-23-2005, 11:45 PM
I bought a new sony CDX-F5700.... lets just say it lasted one week... then I had several problems with the head unit and I returned it. The sound quality isn't that great (toyota factory was better).
1. played only half of an MP3 disk
2. regular cd skipped (brand new, no dirt)
3. I had a rear channel the 1st and 2nd day... nothing after that...

Next head unit is going to be a Clarion, I used to have a DXZ725, and loved it.

01-24-2005, 02:29 AM
My roommate has a newer Sony Xplod in his Escort...I'm not that impressed with it. The rest of his system is stock, however - so not the best comparison.

01-24-2005, 02:57 PM
Used to run MOBILE ES HUs exclusively. No more as they are no more. The ES line is still available in Japan to my knowledge, but they get all the good stuff.

Love the looks and functionality of Alpine yet I hate the 1-bit DAC.

My friend has a Sony HU and it was a flip out like that one, the CD got stuck in it and one day the motor for the screen to fold out broke and then about a week later the entire thing broke, it wouldnt turn on or anything. We checked all fo the wiring and everything and it was all fine. He had only had the HU for about 6 months too. I dont know why they have become so unreliable. Good luck with a good HU though!

01-26-2005, 03:30 PM
just about any motorized face *****.

just about any motorized face *****.

Fortunately you got a good one. Man, I miss the C90-4000 combo. :(

I know this is old but I do. I have the cdxm9905x. Great unit. Nothing wrong with this sony HU so far. I even watch Dvd's now on the screen.

01-27-2005, 01:56 AM
Im not even gonna read any of this thread... but to just let you know... my first deck... was a sony... and the screen just STOPED working... and then a week later ... same with my friends... (differnt models) and now all my friends have pioneer or alpine... and such... and never have that problem

I remember that one really nice Sony ES that I tihnk Crutchfield had, btu it was out of the average persons range
