Just use the ID's then

you have run horns with those things dont you? i think i need a soft ribbon tweet for metal-right?

Nope, you can run any tweeter.
Metal= usually harsher
silk= not as harsh
But thats not the case all the time

weeter Treatise

Major Considerations:

Cost –

Power - power handling - the ability to play loud

Control - transient response – the ability to stop and start instantly – openness and transparency result

Energy – the ability to maintain a wide radiation angle at high frequencies

Size – Will it fit in the “installation”?

Extension – frequency response – high for maximum “air” and low for more midrange content

Basic Types:

Balanced drive (cone) – various materials

Soft dome – cloth (silk), “poly”

Hard dome – metal, ceramic on metal, ceramic, paper, diamond

Ribbon – flat and folded (Heil)

Ionic – typically spherical

Electrostatic – requires high voltage bias and drive voltage

Piezoelectric - either crystal or film

Any of these can be horn loaded.

The least expensive design for the results obtained is the balanced drive type. This small flat basically cone type driver is found on the vast majority of off the shelf two-way speaker systems. These are mounted on various posts and brackets in front of the mid-bass driver. Power, control and extension on the low side are sacrificed. Transient response can be good but is usually sacrificed for efficiency to reduce burnout problems. Ultimately power handling cuts this approach short.

Probably the most popular driver type used in higher quality installations is the soft dome. Here an inherently larger voice coil allows softer heavier diaphragms to be utilized. These can provide excellent transient response. The weakness in this approach is a somewhat soft top-end. This can sound pleasant with smooth-listening type music but excitement and realism is diminished on really clean dynamic source material. This is technically a rapid energy response decline in the top octave. The top octave is 10 to 20 thousand Hz.

The ribbon, ionic and electrostatic types have excellent transient response but only the ribbon is practical in a car. The limitation here is power response. The large surface area is excited evenly giving reduced dispersion. Some newer types have graduated drive and damping to improve this but the line source construction only provides extended dispersion in one plane. It should be noted that very large area sources of any technology, provides good top-end if listened to close up in the so-called “near field”. This only applies to very large diaphragms. For instance a ribbon drive headliner. This degree of elaboration has not been commercial to date.

Piezoelectric devices do not survive well in high temperature environments. Electrostatic speakers are large and require special high voltages to operate. Ionic types take this to an even higher level and are not really practical.

The hard dome – done right – is the optimal choice for practical automotive sound systems. The small size, flat energy response, moderate cost and good power handling offers the best balance of parameters. Until recently hard dome types have had a somewhat hot sound due to response variations right at the very top of the response end. These deviations have recently been engineered out of the response to a sufficient extent to put the best metal domes ahead of the soft dome.

Ceramic and other non-metallic super hard materials have been used as diaphragms. These are excellent but are very expensive as a rule. If the price comes down those with adequate power handling will begin to appear in the automotive environment. Currently they only appear in high-end audio home speakers.

Are those ID 8's 2 ohms ?

no i thier 4 ohm- i think let me go check

what happened to you mr. supa c

Nothing. Im fine
There was an ebay auction for some 2 ohm x overs, thats why i asked

IHFJ05

since mine are svc 4ohm could you wire them to the amp in a 2 ohm load?

supa_c
01-11-2005, 05:36 AM
yep, but thats only 1 channel

i dont know what to do i really didnt want to custom fit these doors. with the idq8's id have to get a a/b circuit amp and for the tweetes how would you power just the tweets?

IHFJ05
01-11-2005, 05:43 AM
i cant find a component that has knock down midbass and warm highs

supa_c
01-11-2005, 05:43 AM
crossover.
If you dont want to mod the doors then scrap the idea of the 8's
The Koda 6.1's would be a good option

i heard their lacking mid range and the tweets are too melow-but who am i to say i never heard them. money is not the issue here i want to jam with no hesitations
