How do you know you need one?

Please try to make your posts a lil more legible. Puncuation is not very hard.

If You are running .75" mdf walls & .75" MDF slot port with a common wall then I have your results as follows:

Gross Volume: 3.342 (31x15x16 external = 29.5x13.5x14.5 internal).

You didn't give woofer displacement.

Port area of 37.125 sq in. with a length (straight) of 40" you're tuned to 31.4hz with a net vB of 2.252 cubes.

To tune to 32.02hz - You'd need 36.5" port length.

You'd have to run a "labyrinth" port:
1st board 13.25"
2nd board 12.5"
3rd board 5.75".

Good luck

this is what nick proposed. and im pretty sure his calculations are correct. im going to be doing this for my box
"labyrinth" port:
1st board 13.25"
2nd board 12.5"
3rd board 5.75".
The question is how to do one or if i can see pictures of what it looks like i can manage

like this (http://www.geocities.com/xxinfamisxx/12recvented.html)

though I'm confused on the numbers... 13.25, 12.5, 5.75 cause I thought it was more like X,X,...,X,Y and not X,Y,Z

the reason the first board and second board aren't the same length is because the thickness of the wood (.75") at the opening of the vent is adding to the length of the first board. It really only goes into the box 12.5" like the second board. You need to stay 2" off the back of the box. That's the reason the second board is 12.5", because the box is 14.5" internally. 14.5" - 12.5"= 2"

Make the vent 2" wide, using the left side wall of the box as the left side of the vent. Make the vent go from the front to the back, leave a 2" gap from actually touching the back of the box with the first board. Then measure over 2", and start your second board, but make this board touch the back of the box and go forward within 2" of touching the front of the box. Then lastly, measure over 2" and start board 3 touching the front of the box and make it 5.75" long. And that should be all as far as the vent is concerned ;)
