just use a flat baffle for the front. will save you lots of fiberglass and time. use muchos kittyhair on the inside edges to ensure a nice firm bond :)

a quick way to get a nice solid inside instead of using 8 layers of glass is mixing resin with some aerosil powder (resin thickning agent) and plastering the inside of the box with it- this way you dont have to put down 5 layers of glass on the outside of the fleece or the rear mould.

just get some of that resin thickening agent stuff - called silicia somthing - and mix 50\50 with resin\mkep and do a 1\4" layer on the inside of the fleece (if you dont use a mdf baffle and use fleece instead) and you dont need to glass the fiberglass box.

i found this out from the12volt installbay

i don't think i'm gonna mdf the front...i like the flowy rounded look better than the flat look...

just FYI, you can get some stuff called fumed silica (or cabosil, Colloidal Silica, SiO2, Silicon Dioxide or Silicon Aerogel, there are a few different names). its a powder-like substance that will thicken your resin like a bodyfiller, only stronger.

you can put like 1\4" on the inside of your box, and then you are done. this is how the guys at HZemall.com do their boxes. then just fill\sand\skim\sand the outside of the box, and your ready for paint. much eaiser thatn 7 layers of glass, cheaper, and works just as well.

just thought id let ya know. its a trade secret.

my boss is having me find an amp for his son.it is gonna power 2 re8's.
going in this box...he wants something from best buy or a local audio shop, but if there is something from an online store, i could probably talk him into it. NO EBAY! someone help me, he wants to get a sony amp, so it'll match his h/u. so post up some good amps around the 500w range. trying to stay in the $100-200 price range. thanks!!!

the RE8s are DVC4 right? if so, look for an amp that puts out 350w-400w rms at 4 or 1 ohms, should not be hard to find, look into Profile for cheap

all right guys, i gotta problem...i filled it with water tonite to get the volume. its .93ft^3 by the way. anyway its got a couple of small pinhole leaks in it on the top edge. i guess i got carried away with the die grinder. so what should i do? can i just mix up some resin and pour it inside?

01-02-2005, 11:32 PM
bondo / resin will do teh trick

req
01-02-2005, 11:54 PM
yea, mix the resin with some sort of thickner - sawdust should work good... or you can waste, i mean use bodyfuiller\resin mix so its not such a liquid, but not a paste. you might wanna put a single layer of glass (weave if you got it) on the INSIDE of the box first... maybe a piece of old Tshirt soaked in resin maybe.

but yea, just seal it from the inside.

TimberJon
01-03-2005, 11:41 AM
Speaking of watching your eyes.. safety glasses sometimes do NOT work. In my boss's case, dude got a little catalyst splashed on his eyebrow, it melted off his hair where it landed. (we use the good stuff though, Smith Fibercast) and he still has a pink scarry-looking spot thats all smooth. So yea.. I recommend the kind of safety "goggles", not glasses- that have the wraparound for your forehead.

TimberJon
01-03-2005, 11:44 AM
cavosil works good when mixed with resin, just mix it up so its nice and thick before you catalyze it, better application than just pure resin, and it doesnt delam from your material or thin out by drooping.

jellyfish420

i drew the logo by hand, it is "misted" w/ silver so when the clear goes over it will be a "ghost" logo. sanding makes it smoother. i use 220grit on the bondo, 800grit on the primer, 2000grit on the color and clear. it will have a mirror finish when i'm done. hell it'll be better than the finish on most of your cars!!!;)

sorry it took so long, but here is the pic from the other side.
he came to the shop today and we had to take the seat out,
take the subs out and seal them. when i orignally put it in
i didn't have time to take out the seat so after the box was
bolted in place and came time to put the subs in there wasn't
room for the screw gun, so the screws went in at an angle
and didn't let the driver "sit" all the way down. so i took everything
apart and threw in some ATV blue gasket maker. sounds better now:)

wondering about how deep that enclosure is at the bottom. Reason I ask is because I just finished fabbing an entire rear panel for two re8s and a 4 channel amp and xovers for my standard cab chevy.
