I just bought three cans of black, high gloss spray paint and sprayed 3 layers on my box. Well the mdf just soaks it up like a sponge. After the paint drys its all blotchy and not glossy at all. Any ideas on how to fix this. Should I just keep applying the layers? Will primer fix this?

Primer or resin the entire box, then paint.

get some fiberglass resin - a paint roller and a little wall-paint-thingie...

mix enough resin to cover the box (you prolly wont need the bottom painted cuz.. you wont see it :)

paint the box, let it dry (this stuff is pretty PERMINANT, so dont let it get on anything importnat... like your garage floor. then you wanna wear disposable rubber gloves, a long sleeve shirt, and a filter mask thing.

then sand it down with some 80grit paper on a sanding block to smooth her out, then hop to somthing bigger like 120grit - smooth as a bottom.

paint a nice even coat of primer on that, wetsand with some real-high grit and lay a coat of black gloss (SEM paint makes real good products), wetsand with high grit again, repeat the paint\sand until its got a nice and even coating.

then get some gloss clearcoat and do the same thing you did with the black gloss.

it will be uber shiny. and if you are bold engh, mask off an area that will get nothing on it, cut out a design (CAREFULLY ****IT) with a razor\xacto knife, paint white gloss on that, when it dries, pull off the masking tape, and wetsand (A LITTLE) and then start your gloss, might have to do 2 coats to cover up the black.

good luck mang.

Not trying to dog on you or anything, but I hope you relize how much work is going to have to go into it to make it as glossy as the paint on your truck.... spray paint isn't the easiest to make look good(ie: orange peal).

Fiberglass resin is overkill IMO. It's expensive, messy and you only get a couple minutes to play. Since MDF is a wood product, you can use any of the sealers available in the wood finishing area at Home Depot. A cheap wood sealer can be made by mixing regular yellow wood glue with water.

that could work well too.

fiberglass resin is sure to work. but getting a good paintjob is as good as the time you spend painting.
