View Full Version : Steel Box??

I do a fair bit of metal fab work. I just built a 1/8" steel sealed box for an old kicker solobaric 10" and it performs very well. I am curios why more people don't use steel. Comparable in weight to 3/4" MDF and I was able to save a lot of space. I made the enclosure to fit under the passenger seat of a 1999 Dodge pick up. I was able to achieve . 66 CU ft. It was tight but it fit. I could have never done this with MDF. So long story short I want to make some waterproof airtight steel enclosures for some ti elite 9 m midbass for my doors in my 2000 tahoe.I was just wandering if their could be any adverse effects and that is why no one uses it. Thoughts ... thanx

2-3 times the cost 8X4 sheet of MDF is about $24 steel would be like 60 at 1/8" if it was a large box you would have to just brace it not to flex. I guess cost could be a factor as well as welding skills.

you would have to be really careful about resonating panels
i dont see the cost really making it worth it

i think a box made out of diamond plate steel would look soo bad ***!

itd probably be better to just get some diamond plate veneer and put that on a regular MDF box

how about conductivity. A short on a steel box would be a *****.

i think it would be cool, but sounding good. Well that is another story
put a thin layer of clay on the inside of the box and voilla.
maybe some dampening and good bracing. i dont see why it would be such a problem. would be hella strong and you could chrome it. maybe use aluminum to conserve weight - but i heard welding aluminum was a pain in the ***, but imagine the props for anodizing it. would be shweet.

if what possible though. Don't you think that audiobahn would already have a chrome box.

i know. Good thought though. I am sure audiobahn already tried. But try it again and post some pics.

i wanna see some pics of that box

Here's a pic of someone who has used steel, but he only used it for the baffle, and he used MUCH thicker steel. But imagine the strength of a 1"+ steel plate compared to having to use 5-6 sheets of MDF.
Plus he also used bracing (the steel across the front of the box)

jesus, no flexing from that thing
