View Full Version : 6x9 in 5X7 spot?

09-28-2004, 11:47 PM
Car is in my sig, basically, I want to take out the 5x7s and replace them with 6x9s. I want to know is if I can do this, and what kind of modding would I need to do.

Currently, I have the speakers attached to a 2 channel amp (see sig) and am not very happy with the lowmid - high range coming out of them. My subs overpower EVERYTHING.

are they goin in the doors or rear deck?

Rear deck.

rear fill is pointless

it is pretty pointless(unless you are doing 5.1 or something), but if you must, go with a 5 1/4" speaker instead of a 6x9.

yea get round. and rear fill is oppinion, not pointless. i like rear fill. and the people that sit in the rear seats enjoy rear fill.

i dont have proper dampening, nor do i have perfect sound stage\imaging. and i doubt half the people here do.

if you want rear fill, get it, but get round speakers. and get component (not coax) you will be much happier.

but most of all, amp them!

one problem, i think you need better speakers. you have soundstorm, which are basically a ripoff of soundstream. uses close wording to play themselvs off as something they arent. either way, that doesnt have much to do with your question, but i am with the others, ditch the rear fill. but one thing is makin me curious what speakers you got in the front doors? are the soundstorm in the fronts or the rear?

Front door speakers are stock. *shame*
I want to replace them, but I don't know what size I need, and I really need to know before I pull the door off.

I have 2 pair of (currently unused) 6.5" speakers. Sonys (****) and RoadMaster (30 RMS with 300 peak?! BS!!) that could be put in their place, the Roadmaster's don't sound half bad, really.
And I do have the rear fill amped. It's the 460 watt amp in my sig.

No matter if people like rear fill or not - I think everyone would agree that you should work on the front stage first.

your car takes 6½'s in the front doors...

As long as you're not the one riding in the back!

the rear passengers in my car can't even tell I have no rear speakers and are actually surprised when I tell them after.

Maybe you're right. I HAVE component speakers, those roadmasters are basically component speakers in a cheap (but nice looking!) box.

I keep the stock speakers because they are 3.2 ohms, and I worry 4 ohm speakers will not be as loud. When / if I take out the front doors I'll replace the stock ones with the RM, if they ****, I'll put the xplods in, when I hear that sucking I'll be happy to put the stock ones in.

I bought one of those convert kits from 5X7/6X8 to 6.5, $6.75 on ebay, shipped, I'm too lazy to get the PVC and do it myself. Time to experiment a little...

I had my rear deck 6x9s, 6.5s fron door, 5x7s rear doors, and my 6x9s were crisper and louder than the others. Oval distortion on mine was less than the round speakers. They sounded so awesome! They were infinitys and the could shake my mirror alone, you just need an external amp to power them, H/U will not! My 6.5s are angled bad and could not hear them in back because the speakers were blocked by the seats and I had to angle the tweeters up so I can hear them, but not good for rear passengers. That is why I got the 6x9s and what a difference. One of the best upgrades but that is just my opinion.

i have a ?, do you know the name of the person on ebay that you got the conversion kit from. Also do they make a kit for my front doors, i have 4x6 in there is there a way to switch them to a round size?

I bought the pair from mjmautoinnovations (http://feedback.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=mjmautoinnovations&iid=7925010801&frm=284). I asked for a tracking number but no reply email, so (s)he's lost brownie points so far. He's got a ****load of speaker conversion sets like the one I got.

Check his for sale items, hope you find what you want (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5723446756&category=14932).

thank you for your help

i have a ? would i notice a difference going from this http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/1884 to this http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/1847 or would it be about the same. Because i hear people saying how round speakers are better and it does make sense. So would it be worth the change or not? thank you

You're asking someone with no real world experience. They both seem like good speakers. The 6.5"s claim higher wattage handling and are cheaper. That's where my recommendation comes in. I'd look for a second opinion.
