How much space required on sides of woofer hole?

I am trying to design a box for my Orion HCCA 12D. I would like to make the box 2.5 cu/ft and tune it to 30HZ - 32HZ (gonna depend on small I can get the front plane). To do so I am trying to make the box small and long to accomodate a really long L shaped slot (16x2.25 inch slot).

What's the minimun amount of space I should leave on the sides of the subwoofer? I don't want to risk the time and find out for myself the hard way = )

And whatever you may reply with....would you be talking about from the hole to the side of the enclosure or from the oute diameter of the sub in the front. Thanks guys.

i don't know, that isn't really that critical, as long as you leave an inch or two. Especially with "superwoofers" that put a lot of stress on the front baffle.

well. i left about 1.5~2 inches for my baffle. as long as the box is nice and strong you shouldnt have problems.

if your that scared, make the front out of 2 sheets of MDF, and make a support piece inside to 'hold' the rear part of the woofer magnet so there is no 'torque' weight on the top and bottom screws, if you understand me.

Thanks for the replies....I originally planned to have 2.5" on both sides but may end up with only 1.5" to squeeze a few more inches in length out of it....my last box for the HCCA had a doubled up baffle that worked well so I may just do that again.
