i was checking this head unit out at a local shop and was wondering what everybody thinks of it, i really liked it, and it says it has 8v or 16v preouts with some line converter, whats the story with this too?

A salesperson probably could have explained it to you pretty well.

It is an 8V deck, but it can be converted to "balanced lines" using the eclipse balanced line converter. I had one of those decks(great deck, btw), and I never used the balanced option. I just used it as an 8V deck.

Basically... the HU has two PAIRS (whole pair, red AND white) for each (Front, Rear, and Non-F or Sub-out) that makes 2 pairs of RCA's for each. There is a pos.(+) and a neg. (-) each carrying 8v. The balanced out converter takes the 6 pairs of rca's...and "spits" out 3 pairs...each carrying a 16v signal. WOOT! I have an 8053 w/ balanced out and love it...it's a HELLA bunch of RCA's tho. peace

forgive me if some of this is wrong I haven't worked with balanced stuff in years. Anyways, balanced cables have 3 wires for each channel. positive, negative and inverse of the positive. When they are at the amp end the inverse is flipped and combined with the positive so the sound that is picked up along the way is canceled out. Usually balanced cables are used in recording, theatre, and live preformances. It's really good for clearing up any interferance. It's a bit overkill in the car world though because typically rca cables are about 12ft. When I was doing outdoor theatre work our snake was well over 200 ft long. We also had high amp wire to run for all the theatre lights and sometimes we couldn't avoid running them by each other. With recording you want as clean of a signal as possible because of obvious reasons. In the car audio world it seems most of the interferance would come from the ends of the cables because that's where all of the electronics are. A rca to balanced converter would be unable to protect the ends of the cables. It doesn't really make sense. However, that's just me :-)

i just use 8v. didnt see a need to run it 16v. this deck owns....there is no comparison to it from anything i used. I run ever single crossover frequency and slope i need for my ID horns and mids. The PEQ is awesome as well, along with the time correction. Pro mode ownz.

I agree....the 8v outs alone own every HU out there- but its nice to know that you are capable of 16v balanced- I mean what other company out there puts it out on a $500-600 HU?Eclipse 8v decks are serious...

well for a mere 40 dollars i can buy a balanced line driver for my bx1000D and have a 18v balanced signal

you sure can, anyone can..... but its is also another link in the chain that could possibly bring in noise as well- been there , done that

went through 3 8v line drivers in my last car, the last one that actually worked well was not $40 thats for sure, more like $120

I know the '04 CD8454 sure does.....not 16v balanced capable, still an 8v deck tho-
also has memory stick behind the face that records mp3's from your pc as well as save the system settings, as well as dowload custom eq settings from eclipse

Line drivers creating a higher voltage compared to sending a balanced signal are two very different beasts.

actually 8v balanced outs off a OEM double DIN into a signal processor.....not the most pleasing to install nontheless

If you get the e-com ($400 add on) it will play, but if you can live without the 16v balanced option, the cd8454 is the way to go.

i wasn't just saying i can buy a line driver i said i can get a BALANCED line driver that doesn't even use rca's (looks like a XLR plug) that goes into a special socket on my hifonics amp sort of of like the symbilink system on the C2K series zapco amps. and the 40 dollar price is because it was a clearance item since it was for the old gen XI amps i'm pretty sure the newer model would be higher than 40 dollars

i thought u woould be hard pressed to find an amp that can handle that many volts.

The eclipse balanced line adaptor makes any amp capable of using the balanced lines(that is pretty much what Eclipse says in their description of their bla, which is model#37601 I believe).

I got the info from Eclipse. You could always call their tech support(800-233-2216) and ask.

Hey, I have seen people do many things in car audio that just don't make any sense to me.

i had worse. walmart extreme sound cd player sending signal to a 8 year old 100w rms jensen amp powering a idmax. apparently a amp can handle twice the voltage if its a balanced signal compared to a unbalanced. i'm only going buy this since the manual lists my amp to accept 9v unbalanced 18 balanced. you probally can turn down the eclipse thing to handle different amps

I'm just amazed that the Jensen amp can accept balanced ins.........
