View Full Version : sundown nightshades in a first gen s10

04-27-2014, 12:37 AM
So I bought this bad boy recently. This will be a sundown exclusive system, or least I will use sundown if available. I'm going to be doing nearly everything myself. The plan is two nightshade v3 12s, two saz 3500s, 2 sundown component sets, and a sax 125x4. Head unit I'm thinking pioneer prs80. For electrical I'm going with XS power batts(a bunch of em) and a mechman alt. If I'm missing something, or you just have questions, fell free to ask. I will post pictures throughout this process.

As far as a little background on the truck, It is a 1987 Chevy s10. Engine rebuilt and has about 500 miles on it. I bought it with the suspension work done. If you want specifics on the bag job PM me. It's a bunch of info that really has no purpose on this forum. Only thing ill say is that it lays out on the frame.

Thought you all would get a kick out of this. Found it at a junkyard while looking for little bits and pieces for the truck.

Paint will probably be the last thing I do. Working on a vehicle that is painted blows big time

So I got everything except for the woofers and batteries. I have been accumulating stuff for a couple of weeks now. Gonna have to cut the door panels for some fabrication. Gonna put two 6.5s and two crossovers on the lower half of the door panel and two tweeters in each dash speaker location. Post some pics soon.

prelim idea for the door panel...

Good fit on the door. Does not hit the seat or the floor.
Also I managed to get the alt and external regulator shipped in

disclaimer: I have never used fiberglass before in my life! decided to give it a try, rather than pay a buddy to do it for me.

Got 50 sq ft of FatMat and 100 sq ft of Rattle trap in today as well. Plan on using the fatMat on the inner door skin and then just placing it wherever i can reach. the Rattle trap will go on top of the FatMat and will cover the inner door skin, floor, and roof.

Pulled the carpet out along with the bench seat. Gonna bolt buckets directly to the floor instead so the two bass amps can stand up in between the seats. Also managed to remove the stock radio and speakers, plus i cut out a bunch of useless wires

I owned a couple of those S10's Nice little trucks but clutch is only good for about 90K..... good move getting the automatic.

Started putting on the FatMat

I hate cutting out the holes in this stuff. Now just to put the rattle Trap on the floor, roof, and inner door skins. Plan on sanding/Bondo on the door pods this weekend.

you say that like it's hard to replace the clutch.

05-01-2014, 07:01 PM
you say that like it's hard to replace the clutch.

Not hard. Drop it off at my mechanic, pay money, done. Just saying that was my only real complaint about the S10 from that era.

I have found out that I hate fiberglass and Bondo. props to anyone who has the patience and skill for body work

At least they still fit on the doors. I was going to paint them, but to hell with that. No way I'm getting these things smooth enough for paint, unlesss i want to spend the next month sanding while smashing my skull against the concrete floor!

05-06-2014, 06:59 PM
sanding fiberglass is hard work. use a little rage bondo/body filler and the sanding becomes way easier. there is a lot more fiberglass work in your future. it takes time

Got all of my wire in today. Here is a comparison shot of the stock ground to the Sky High2/0 OFC

Only thing I managed to accomplish was putting the carpet back in now that all of the FatMat/Rattletrap is in
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d88/topdawg254/Mobile%20Uploads/the%20sundown%20slut/IMG_20140405_175213_832_zpsgzi1sckf.jpg (http://s33.photobucket.com/user/topdawg254/media/Mobile%20Uploads/the%20sundown%20slut/IMG_20140405_175213_832_zpsgzi1sckf.jpg.html)
On a side note, I have fully decided to cover the door speaker pods I made with carpet. I have given up on perfection and just come to the realization that this is my first truly big build. Some learning points will exist regardless. I'm hoping to get a decent amount of work done this weekend, but I got Finals this week so progress could be kinda slow for the next few days

05-11-2014, 10:07 PM
Finally able to make some more progress. Drilled my grommets for the wires to the door.

Also, I got my door pods covered

Next I think I have come up with an idea to run the volt meters and LC-1 off of panel attached to the ashtray. Hard to explain, but I'll take pictures. I'm also going to put the head unit in. This is what I'm staring at now.

More progress! Got the speakers and crossovers wired and mounted onto the door.

Got the radio in as well. I made the tweeter housings to fit in the stock dash speaker locations

Im currently working on my idea to build the two volt meters and lc-1 mount on the underside of the stock ashtray. This is what I got so far.

Volt meter pod with LC-1 in the middle
Got the radio in and the four channel wired up. Component sets work.

Next I plan on recovering the headliner with the same carpet used for door pods. Also gotta make the amp rack fast. Driving this thing with an amp that is not mounted really *****.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d88/topdawg254/Mobile%20Uploads/the%20sundown%20slut/IMG_20140426_174715_002_zpsltc90log.jpg (http://s33.photobucket.com/user/topdawg254/media/Mobile%20Uploads/the%20sundown%20slut/IMG_20140426_174715_002_zpsltc90log.jpg.html)
Got the car's battery in. Other four batteries on the way. Got four XS 2700s for the amps. Plan on doing some major grounding this weekend. Im thinking 4 total under the hood.
1. Batt to Frame
2. Batt to Chassis
3. and 4. Engine to Frame (doing one on each side of the block)
I still have to mount the alt. So that will make at least five grounds just under the hood.
Also ordered aluminum flat bar for buss bars for the bed.

nice job so far man looks clean

Two main grounds from battery. One to the frame and one to the chassis. Before everyone kills me, I know the power wire is tiny compared to the grounds. i have not put the alternator in yet. Still running stock for power (for now at least). Also grounded the block to the frame on either side. Literally only did both sides because I already had the short run of wire and I didn't want to waste it.

Gonna put the new dash pad and door panels back on and wire up an alarm soon. I usually would never touch an alarm, but all I have to wire up is the constant, ground, accessory, and the sensors. Plan on doing a shock sensor and a proximity sensor. I also have a feeling there will be a gap in between the door pods and the stock door panels. I think I cut the panel a little too far. Not really sure how to fix that one. No biggie though.

06-14-2014, 07:23 PM
Hey everyone. had a photobucket fail this week and had to re enter all my pics. Any previous pictures I took will unfortunately not be on be here. If anyone wnats to see all of the pics again just shoot me a PM and I will link you to the gallery on photobucket. Sorry about that.

Now that the formal stuff is out of the way lets get on to progress...
I got the alarm in and working. no pictures because there really isn't anything to see. I did get the stock door panels put back on and there is a slight gap. Still not sure how to fix this but I'm not doing anything major to correct it. The dash pad is also on. You can kinda see all of the weights on the dash from the siliconing process

I hope to get the regulator and alternator mounted soon. I'm still waiting on the nightshades to arrive. As soon as they do The box will be built and then the truck is pretty much done. Fingers crossed that woofers arrive soon. I was hoping to make it to Heatwave in Austin which is the last weekend in July.

06-29-2014, 06:40 PM
Still waiting for the nightshades. Probably just gonna focus on building the amp rack for now. Gonna stand the two saz3500s up on the center console. I'll get pics of the alt and regulator up soon. I was actually hoping on being able to bring the truck to heatwave in Austin at the end of July, but I think time is running short. I kinda knew I should've ordered the woofers earlier.

Alternator and Regulator both in and functional. I mounted the potentiometer for the regulator on the dash. More specifically, in the hole the cigarette lighter was in

Amp rack is halfway done. Just have to build the feet to mount it to the center console.

More than likely gonna start building the box this week. It is going to be a simple ported box. I still have to run the power wire and grounds for the battery bank in the bed. Gonna be drilling lots of holes through the bed this week.

So I have suffered a critical engine issue that has to be worked out. that is the bad news. Good news is that the box is getting closer to being finished.

I also managed to run the two grounds and single power for the buss bars going in the bed for the battery bank. the two outer wires are grounds and the center is power from alt.

Buss bars will be cut out of aluminum flat bar. Batteries are going to sit on the notch in the bed. Still gotta look at where the amp power wires are going to go as well as the speaker leads. Ultimately I'm thinking I'm just going to have to drill more holes through the bed and cab.
