Nice a like it...what version of Winamp do you have for that Pioner skin? I need to download that...

Oh - and Bjork- Hyperballad is a great bass song. First heard that on CKY2K. Glad to see someone else likes it.

thanks guys. it's still a work in progress. i think the next step is to upgrade the monitor and add GPS. i'll keep things updated.

how do you deal with issues of the sub vibrating the hard drive in the laptop?

skeurton
06-03-2004, 05:12 PM
haven't had any vibration issues. i would think that road vibration is worse than any sub vibrations. but i also think that laptop hard drives are more rugged than standard 3.5" hard drives. but we'll see.

when they first amde laptops that was a problem (road vibration) so they fixed almost all issues so that the hard drive wouldnt vibrate...shouldn't have a problem :)

made some recent changes to the setup. i replaced the monitor with a lilliput touchscreen, installed a power button between the TCS and dimmer control, and added GPS software. everything else is the same for the most part.

I hope you have a kick-*** alarm :thumbsup

Everything looks awesome man. Just wondering...how much did that wireless keyboard thing cost?

skeurton

right now, all i have is the stock alarm system. the monitor comes off really easily and i hide that away in the top map compartment. without the monitor, the mount just looks like a cell phone holder. everything else, you can't see. so hopefully you can't steal what you can't see. :)

the keyboard with shipping costs was only $19. it's actually designed for web tv, but it works perfectly with a normal pc. some of the keys are different on the pc, but it came with a sheet of instructions on which keys to switch around and such. it's pretty nifty. here's a complete list of parts with estimated costs.

parts list:

-compaq presario 2710us notebook computer (1.13GHz P3, 512MB RAM, 20GB hard drive) - cost: N/A
-evo n180/presario 2700 port replicator (docking station) x 2 - cost: $200
-laptop car adapter w/ voltage regulator - cost: $26
-reAct 6.2" TFT LCD monitor ? cost: $124
-lilliput 7" TFT LCD touchscreen monitor - cost $289
-ProClip USA (http://www.proclipusa.com) mount + monitor mount - cost: $68
-power acoustik PA-DVD-340 DVD/VCD/MP3/CD/CD-R/RW player - cost: $109
-creative sound blaster mp3+ USB - cost: $40
-ATI remote wonder - cost: $30
-philips ACC10082 compact mini wireless keyboard - cost: $19
-DeLORME earthmate GPS + street atlas 2004 - cost: $120
-belkin tunecast II fm transmitter - cost: $32
-MTX road thunder 202 amplifier - cost: $58
-12" kenwood KFC-W3005 subwoofer - cost: $40
-wiring kits + miscellaneous accessories - cost: ~$125

TOTAL COST: ~$1,280

does the touchscreen work w windows or anything?

yep, works perfectly with windows. it acts just like a USB mouse.

why are you fm modulating??

i know, it's a horrible way to transmit sound through the stereo and i'm about fed up with it. but it's really one of the few options i'm left with right now. i don't have a tape player, so a cassette adapter was out of the question (not like that's any better). i'd like to keep the stock system because for some reason, the circuit board for the LCD that displays the time, climate controls, and radio controls is embedded within the radio headunit. plus, that entire center console face has a board plastered to the back of it as well. so any kind of custom fabrication would mean not being able to know what my heat or A/C is doing.

i'm just waiting for someone to make an aux-input adapter for the stock stereo. there is supposedly one in development right now, but it's been a while.

That is a very nice job, came out looking real good, and seems like its easy to use while driving. Wiring in the trunk looks great, maybe you could clean up the glove box by making a "false floor" in there, so it looks smaller than it really is, and all that equipment is covered up. Just my 2 cents.

thanks. yeah, i'm planning on either fabricating some sort of faceplate for the glove box or at least shaping a piece of foam to fit in there with inserts cut out for each of the units.

saywhat?

how hard was it use before the touchscreen, want to build a computer into my middle console to replace my PS2, but I still want to use my regular LCD, is it stupid to try to have like a wireless optical mouse in there, any suggestion.
(probably going to be a linux machine unless I can dig up a good copy of XP somewhere) I want to have my console lid open and expose the face of the DVD drive and maybe a few USB ports and have a cooling fan or two on rear of console everything else hidden and the power switch on the dash or somewhere.
what I have so far is some parts of an computer, got the Motherboard, CPU, memory, sound card, floppy drive, DVD drive, LCD, power inverter, fm modulator(stock HU), I need a power supply, and a harddrive, and a video card with video plug(rca type) output, and wireles keyboard and wireless optical mouse, am I leaving anything out, all help and suggestions would be appreciated.

sorry for the hijack.

btw, i can do custom fiberglassing for like face plates and stuff.

sounds like a good start, man. you shouldn't have a problem using your existing monitor. just keep in mind that computer text doesn't appear too good unless it's a vga monitor. but this is really irrelevant unless you plan on using some GPS software, which i wanted to do. but the remote i got was the perfect solution when i didn't have a touchscreen. in fact, i still use it for some things. it was really cheap too. just go to ebay and do a search for "ATI remote wonder". you should find a bunch of them there. but you might want to be running windows if you decide to get one. there are some plugins out there for a lot of popular programs that pre-program the buttons for you. there's also a SDK for making your own plugins, but i haven't tried that yet. i've also seen people use a wireless mouse or even a touchpad. so you should be good.

also, good to know about the fiberglassing stuff. i'll keep that in mind.

if you read the first page of this thread, a few people have confirmed that laptop hard drives are built pretty tough. i don't know enough about it to say the same about regular 3.5" hard drives though. but i have seen shock absorbent holders for them. i still think that road vibration would be worse than vibration from any subs.

I dont know, my subs rattled my radar detector till it broke (the latch that held it to the metal thing on the windshield) and rattles anything out of place in the car. well guess Ill just have to try it and see, thanks for all the help.
