View Full Version : Build Log: The boss' truck...

01-18-2014, 09:15 PM
This build log isn't going to be super expensive since most upgrades are out of my pocket into a vehicle that I don't own... I just want to make this truck mine because I will be spending a lot of time in it for the next 5-6 years. Keep in mind if I quit or get fired, I will have all stock equipment to replace the aftermarket stuff in storage as I see fit.

First, there's my old company truck that tried to leave me in the field over and over because the fuel injection system has issues...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/BE07AD8E-D267-4F5A-B353-8D302C459E6D_zps0ycfszyo.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/BE07AD8E-D267-4F5A-B353-8D302C459E6D_zps0ycfszyo.jpg.html)

My boss got me a new work truck. It's a 2014 GMC Sierra 2500HD with a Duramax. I had to give up my old truck which was a Megacab, So now I feel cramped for space something severe.

The new truck:

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/EF4A0264-A450-4B13-939E-AAA046374F44_zpsqrldzkq7.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/EF4A0264-A450-4B13-939E-AAA046374F44_zpsqrldzkq7.jpg.html)

It's pretty plain, but I'm also lucky because the boss doesn't often buy us new trucks. We do need trustworthy, tough trucks that can drag trailers off highway. The Duramax is strong. If this thing had wings...

Upgrades so before I received the truck:
1- bedliner and tool box - must haves
2- cheap black nerf bars (set the tone for what I'm doing now)
3- legal tint on front windows to match factory tint
4- Bluetooth and a cell phone booster
5- leveling kit and alignment (much beter than stock)

I received the truck December 20th with a cool 26 miles on the odometer. I bought some organizational items for the cab and the bed on the way home. Then I started with rims... I usually get mud tires right a way but my boss told me to wear out the stock tires before I get to upgrade... so I put the stock tires onto some black rims.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/E644BD56-2E87-449C-9BE2-B5EBAC19D67D_zps6ixzv8z6.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/E644BD56-2E87-449C-9BE2-B5EBAC19D67D_zps6ixzv8z6.jpg.html)

My mechanics work fast which causes things like scratches and dents in the bedrails when they install toolboxes into the bed.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/FC87E113-8CA0-4DB3-B87D-772045C01CCE_zpsm6sppz0e.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/FC87E113-8CA0-4DB3-B87D-772045C01CCE_zpsm6sppz0e.jpg.html)

Well, I know how to fix that... Bushwacker OEM style bed rail covers.

Now the truck has about 2000 miles on the odometer.

01-18-2014, 09:19 PM
That's a goof looking truck man.

01-18-2014, 09:33 PM
The boss is paying for the XM Satellite radio on the stock stereo so I'm going to leave it in there. It gets expensive real quick to put a new deck in because I do like all the bells and whistles. The stock system stinks... it's not even the Bose system.

I started with picking a box for the subs. It's a dual 10 down-firing ported box from OBCON
Obcon 07 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 2500 3500 Crew Cab 10" Ported Box OBQ69 10c | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBCON-07-2013-CHEVY-SILVERADO-1500-2500-3500-Crew-Cab-10-Ported-Box-OBQ69-10c-/121050232637?pt=US_Speaker_Sub_Enclosures&hash=item1c2f27f73d)

It was cheap. Now that I've seen it I know why. It says in the ebay add that it's 5/8" wood. I see a couple pieces of 1/4" MDF right behind where the subs fit...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/98A55649-0566-41DD-B772-35E04942C6B7_zpsp9abnsea.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/98A55649-0566-41DD-B772-35E04942C6B7_zpsp9abnsea.jpg.html)

To make the flimsy stuff a little tougher I did a layer of resin, a layer of fiberglass cloth, then a couple more layers of resin.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/615886DC-7AEB-4F18-B661-7397A62A4D8A_zpsznf45286.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/615886DC-7AEB-4F18-B661-7397A62A4D8A_zpsznf45286.jpg.html)

Then I flipped the box over and did a couple layers of resin inside.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/462545A1-DFA6-45BD-9B53-85A869B5C538_zpsucbs9dx7.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/462545A1-DFA6-45BD-9B53-85A869B5C538_zpsucbs9dx7.jpg.html)

I didn't add much to the height of the box or limit the mounting depth by coating the wood with resin. I'm not going too crazy with this truck anyhow.

01-18-2014, 09:42 PM
Oh yeah... There was a gnarly lip on the end of the port.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/FE1D4490-D97E-4C0F-A61C-50EF90F0DEC5_zpsmuabz8yb.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/FE1D4490-D97E-4C0F-A61C-50EF90F0DEC5_zpsmuabz8yb.jpg.html)

Time to break out the flush-trim router bit... oh, I loaned my router to hunterw... oh well, lets sand the port open...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/18FFB97E-9565-4184-83D8-89347F4E6B64_zpsershzoth.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/18FFB97E-9565-4184-83D8-89347F4E6B64_zpsershzoth.jpg.html)

That's where I stand now. I need some black paint to make the port pretty again now.

Next is? Looking for advise.
I've considered a Fosgate Prime 1000 watt amp and a couple P2 10"s
I've considered an American Bass mini 900 watt amp and a pair of XD 10"s
And I've considered a Powerbass asa1000.1xd and a set of XL 10"s
Which do you think? Other cheap options you think might work better. Remember my 5.75" max mounting depth.

01-18-2014, 09:48 PM
get some cheap plasti dip from home depot lol.

01-18-2014, 10:06 PM
Id run the xd 10s with the mini 900w

01-19-2014, 10:00 AM
Id run the xd 10s with the mini 900w

That's kind of where I was leaning. It's the cheapest option and the smallest sub stage of the three listed. I don't need much.
i also have some dd510s on a watch list. I just don't know what I want.

01-19-2014, 10:39 AM
ewww, 38hz. :P

01-19-2014, 11:26 AM
ewww, 38hz. :P

I did some calculations. This thing is .7 cuft per sub. There's a sad emoticon...
The port tuning is impossible for me to calculate because it shrinks and opens with the wedge of the box. With the largest port area it does tune to 38hz. The smallest port area it tunes to 20hz. That'a a median of 29hz. Not positive on the calcs though cuz of the changing port size...

I just lowballed for some AB DX10s (Not the XDs previously mentioned) and got them so I also ordered my mini AB amp. We'll see how this works. Maybe I'll just remove the back seat and throw my 3 - RD Alpha Max 15"s in there and tear this **** up.

01-19-2014, 11:32 AM
If it is indeed .7cuft per chamber and they have a shared port that yields roughly 29hz, that port will be entirely too small for the air movement provided by those woofers. I guess you'll see how it goes but it doesn't seem too great to me as of now. lol

01-19-2014, 04:13 PM
I added a couple more layers of resin to the box today and chased the edges of the box to make sure seams are sealed.
I started building my amp install kit. I thought I had a 4ga amp kit it storage but I'm guessing I gave it away. I've decided I'm going to use a Kicker 1/0 power wire w/ a Kicker 250amp fuse and a Knu Koncepts Kolosus 1/0 ground, then step down to 2 gauge within a foot of the amp. I found a weenie blue wire which will work perfect for a sensing wire and a set of twisted Kolosus RCA. Now all I need is a high/low converter.

Amp install kit. I've got tons or ring terminal, solder and bolts for making this happen.

Extra 1/0 (For use in the next ride I do competitions in). That roll weighs around 60lbs on the arm scale...

Changed my mind on the wiring. If I leave and have to evacuate the truck quick I'm not going to want to take the time to remove the wiring. I have a knukonceptz 4 gauge amp kit in the mail. What I did get today was:

2x American Bass D4 DX-10s(Thank goodness for the dustcap logo being sensible and not like on the site):

I've seen this thing mentioned a couple of times and I still haven't figured out exactly what it's for. Is this a replacement bass knob? Is it even a bass knob? What's so great about it?

01-24-2014, 10:46 PM
Does that amp do rated? That is crazy small

01-25-2014, 02:01 AM
Yea they do. Beastly lil things.

The PAC LC-1 ties into your RCAs and min=0% and max=100% of the signal is passed through the RCA cable. This is very useful for competing since you can repeat the tone you want to burp at full volume on the head unit and your burp is via the twist of the little knob on your LC-1.
The LC-2 is the same but it's a high-low converter too. I think it'll be useful to be able to quiet the subs from time to time but I mostly needed the converter.

More pics...

The box came with a couple pieces of poly-fill. I guess OBCON knew they didn't build the chambers as large as advertised. Let me make this clear in case people find this googling OBCON, DO NOT BUY OBCON BOXES! This one was not as advertised at all.
I put a little glue and glued the poly-fill in place:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/79C2637B-DF6B-433C-8733-B798880239E7_zpsejuvh4fj.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/79C2637B-DF6B-433C-8733-B798880239E7_zpsejuvh4fj.jpg.html)

Subs wired and in the box:

I was hoping my amp kit would come in today. It's in town but won't get to me until Monday. I'll start pulling interior panels and get everything in next weekend.

01-27-2014, 09:25 PM
Amp kit came in. I'll probably wait until this weekend to install. I'd hate to get started out in the oilfield and not have time to finish and be driving with the panels and carpeting not in place...

The truck now has 3400ish miles after a month of driving. Here's the truck as I arrived on a new location today:

That's a good looking truck. The tires look pretty **** small though.

01-28-2014, 06:30 AM
The boss doesn't like when I get larger-than-stock sized tires. I don't know if have room to fit larger tires with the wheels fully turned either...it's close.
I will go with Goodyear Mud tires when I swap. I think they're will be very slightly larger but have much squarer shoulders on the tread. Stock will still look too small to me tho.

02-01-2014, 07:09 PM
Whelp, it's all in...
My very busy dash. Hands free blue tooth and booster + cradle for the phone. The right side accessory plug that the GPS is plugged into has been re-wires to only be on when the ignition is on or on accessory...not always on like they all were. The LC-2 is wired into the left rear speaker wires. I had to sand down the LC-2 to make it fit in the little opening in the dash. It sticks out too far, but it sure does work nice.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/2ED24B91-08F2-4ABB-AC6C-E94D9B701B12_zpsslurmb43.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2ED24B91-08F2-4ABB-AC6C-E94D9B701B12_zpsslurmb43.jpg.html)

Installed the Knu 4 gauge wire. Loomed it to it went thru a grommet into the cabin since I had some loom around:

Amp wired and on. I double and triple checked everything every step of this install since I've never installed to a factory head unit before. It's under the back of the back seat. Wiring isn't clean but its never going to be seen so I'm not worried about it:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_2720_zps1b01377a.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/IMG_2720_zps1b01377a.jpg.html)

And the dumb OBCON box...To be replaced around the time I receive my tax refund.:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/2F48EE9A-6949-45FA-8892-743202EDEB87_zpsghi4ucap.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2F48EE9A-6949-45FA-8892-743202EDEB87_zpsghi4ucap.jpg.html)

The blue bin that holds most of my paperwork is right in front of the port.
All in all the sub stage sounds ok. It's not crystal clear and it's not very loud, but It is a huge upgrade from stock.
I'd like to build my own box for the subs and what I really want is to replace the stock head unit. My next most likely upgrades to this truck are nice front door speakers and another light layer of tint over the factory tint on the back windows.

02-09-2014, 04:09 PM
One more little thing this weekend... I added side window visors.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_2727_zps63e84622.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/IMG_2727_zps63e84622.jpg.html)

I'm going to go ahead and do a head unit and door speakers in it next weekend hopefully. I'm going to work in Moab, Utah hoping to be home by next weekend.
The truck also had it's first oil change at 5,000 miles yesterday and had a new right side headlight assembly installed on warranty(It had moisture in it).

02-16-2014, 04:51 PM
Welp, at it again... Cleaned up the dash a little. The truck now has a Kenwood DVD with bluetooth, xm radio thingy, and a backup camera. It cleaned up the dash just a little getting rid of the aftermarket bluetooth and allowed me to change out the LC-2 for my LC-1.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/Mobile%20Uploads/2ED24B91-08F2-4ABB-AC6C-E94D9B701B12_zpsslurmb43.jpg (http://s681.photobucket.com/user/nowayhoser/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2ED24B91-08F2-4ABB-AC6C-E94D9B701B12_zpsslurmb43.jpg.html)

The front speakers were replaced with a set of Kenwood eXcelon XR1800P components too(very awesome sound quality + loud). I have a bunch of deadener left around from the competing days I will probably pull door panels again next week and slap a sheet or two in each door. I still need to tint the back window a little darker and I have a heavy duty pre-runner front bumper ordered.

03-08-2014, 12:42 PM
6700 miles on the truck now. I've been working a lot lately and haven't done much except for wash it once or twice, until the new bumper came in.

I need to get some lights and a winch for the truck now, but I want to build a new sub box first. I still haven't added the deadener to the front doors even tho the door panels have been off twice now. I was just looking at the back seat mounts and think I can raise it 1/2"-5/8" safely and easily with some spacers giving me just a touch more room for my new box.

I found a winch in town for cheap today...

I ran down to the shop where I could use a jib crane to hold up the bumper:

...and pulled the bumper off

Slipped the winch in then re-installed the bumper. (Hadn't hooked up power in this pic)

Top view of the winch. I had to buy a couple of 4.5" clamps to fit the power unit onto the motor of the winch. Turned out OK.

It was cold out today so I didn't work on the new sub box any.

Looks real good. I really like the front bumper + winch.

Looking forward to the next couple of steps on your project.

Still haven't deadened the doors or worked on a sub box. I did however Plasti-Dip some chrome emblems to black...

And the real pain done with a lot of razor work... I never did look to see if I could remove the letters it would have been much easier

I also got a Daystar winch keep-er-staight-er thing and a couple of 3/4" D-rings on the bumper.

Does 56k still exist? Sorry for so many photos if it does...

I didn't snap any photos but I replaced the American Bass 1880 with a DD M1A. It did make it a little louder to the ear. The box is seriously lacking though. I'm strongly considering buying 4x Incriminator Audio I series 8"s. I think a better box will help these 10" AB subs tho.
