Alright, so I'm going to attempt to start my own build log and we'll see how this turns out lol. Pretty pumped and excited to see how this is going to turn out and can't wait to share it with you guys! Just check in every now and then to see updated pictures. This is going to be a slow build... sorry. Gonna be about a month before I'm done! Going to be lots of pics in this one, so be prepared! :)

Mark from Car Audio Fabrications will be designing the enclosure for me! Big thanks to him for being patient and helping me out.

Anyways, here's my car. It's a daily driver!

Thanks! I took a chance with the camera. I know they make ****** speakers, but I've honestly never heard about their other products. I went on a limb with the camera hoping it would work as well as the people on the reviews said it would! We'll see...

Installed the door speakers! Sorry I didn't get any pictures. But here's a little test of them playing at a moderate volume. Was recorded from my phone, so that's why it's cut off. I'll fix that if I do more videos. Sound clean!

Also... As I'm preparing for the wall in my hatch, is it really worth sound deadening the floor of where the rear seats and spare tire were? Would it really make that much of a difference with tons of wood on top, AND it walled off?

Mark from Car Audio Fabrications finished the box design for me today! Huge thanks to him! He did a great job, and was extremely patient with me. I can't wait to build it. The outer layer of the baffle will be a bit different from the outer baffle in the picture since I'm going to build the outer baffle flush with the interior of my car for a complete seal off.

Don't hate on my stickers. For each one I put on the outside of my car, I should have an increase of 1db per sticker. Spent a couple hours doing the math last night.

Slowly starting the whole process haha. I started wiring up the backup camera but I found out that's a ***** to do. I want to wire it up to stay on while I'm driving, but the only way I think I can do that is to wire it up to my battery and using a switch rather than my tail light. If anyone has any suggestions on how to hook it up to stay on 100% of the time than that would be nice.

Nice.

So I finished wiring up the backup camera today and what a pain in the *** that was. Didn't help much that the box came with no instructions, so I had to get my dad to help me wire it up the way I wanted it. Nonetheless, it works perfect. Wired it up to the starting battery with a switch to keep it on while I'm driving instead of hooking it up to the tail lights.

Few more hours until I'm making the first trip to home depot to start the wall! Think it's possible to finish the wall in a single day? Maybe minus the outer baffle with the weird curves? That would be my goal for tomorrow... But I highly doubt I'll make it that far.

Today was fairly successful I suppose. Made decent progress, but not near as much progress as some of your professional box builders would have made. Basically ended up cutting all the pieces (asides from the wood pieces that will fill in the gaps as closely as possible), and test fitting inside of the car. Definitely fits snug like a bug in a rug! ;) In fact, it sits in there so snug that I was able to drive home from my parents house back to my place without it imprinting me on to the windshield of my car! Was a good 20-25 minute drive. Driving hazard... I know, I know.

On Monday, I plan on cutting out the holes, port and permanently fixating (bolting, gluing, screwing, etc) it inside of my car. Hopefully... just hopefully... subs and wiring can be done that day too. But I won't get my hopes up.

Friday and Saturday of next week I plan on filling in the sides with wood and then spray foaming the sides to make sure it's got a nice seal all the way around. Also will finish any wiring that isn't done, and maybe paint the back and front wall of the box. That's not a big priority of mine however.

Will post pics tomorrow night after work! :)

Finishing it all up today! I don't see why I wouldn't be able to finish today. May not be able to fit in the sides where the box sits or seal up all the gaps but I should at least have the box inside of there all wired up. :)

I have no idea what you're talking about. Feels like my suspension got an upgrade to me...

I kid. The suspension definitely can't be healthy on my car with that box inside of there. Definitely didn't account for that or think it would be that big of a deal. It could be worse though, I suppose.

RoYALbLUE08

definately need a custom heavy duty suspension for that, or maybe even get coilovers and keep it raised and put it on full stiffness... but idk how you can drive like that without being able to see out of your rearview window lol i constantly look through my rearview window every couple of seconds i drive to see whos behind me and whatnot. and also how are you going to reverse when you need to without seeing? you got a rearview camera?

Indeed I do have a camera. Check the 2nd page. :) Sad to say, but I won't be able to afford an upgrade on my suspension for quite a long time.

Thanks for the comments guys! Got it finished! At least the 'box' that is. Still need to fill in the gaps and seal it all up, butttttt, that will have to be done another day. Possibily tomorrow if I have time!

Definitely sounds loud, and to the ear it sounds like it's breaking 150, but I could be wrong. I've only been to a couple comps so my ear isn't as well trained as some of you guys. My last setup did 144.5 in the kick, and this sounds considerably louder. We'll see when I get it metered! Whenever that will be...

Also, this may or may not be a stupid question. As far as I know, the whole 'break in' sha-bang isn't necessarily true, but I'm hoping when the surround loosens up a little, and if it does, it will play lower? Because right now it's killing the highs (40hz+) but is extremely lacking on the lows (anything under 33hz). What's up with that? Will it start to play lower and lower and they 'break in'?

Pics will be up tomorrow!

akadj

It will break in and play lower.. But nothing noticeable.. Couple hz at best.. What is your box size before any displacements and what is your port surface area and length?

Box size is 10 cubes after displacements. Not sure on before since Mark from CAF designed it for me. Port length is 20.5 inches with a cross area of 112in^2, tuned at 32hz. If it's not going to be noticeable, than I'm pretty disappointed tbh. My two 12" cvxs hit lower than these 15's... Although the box for the 12's I had was tuned at 30hz. Could it really make THAT much of a difference? I miss my lows. :(

Edit: Could it by chance be anything to do with my LPF or Subsonic filter? I have my LPF set around 50-60hz I think? Can't remember; I'll check tomorrow. The Subsonic filter is set pretty much as low as it can go if I remember correctly. Not even sure what the subsonic filter is actually used for to begin with.

Even more edit: Learned up on SS filters and figured out that I should set my SS filter at 24hz (half an octave lower than 32hz, yes?). I think I'm still happy with my LPF set around 60hz. May bring it up to 70 and see how that sounds.

akadj
01-25-2014, 11:45 AM
Im sure you are aware, but if not... Turning your low pass filter higher to 70 or 80 will result in more higher frequency bass to to be played... Not lower bass notes like 30.

I've built a few walls and currently still have one, one thing you have to remember about a wall vs a couple 12's in the back of a Honda civic is the wall doesn't have anything to load off of as where the 12's in a civic have a bunch of possible loading surfaces.

Its common for people to think if you throw a couple woofers in a wall right behind you it will be loud as fvck. Some people are lucky, and some people are good. Most times the results end with a rebuild.

The box does seem like it should work, my wall for two 15's is 10.5 cubes minus displacement, port is just over 200 sqin and 6" long. Sitting at 153.5 with one amp.. I know I'm tuned a lot higher then you though, about 55/60 hz

I had multiple regular ported boxes for a year or two in my car. Decided to go to the extremes and try for a wall since I plan on staying in the car audio niche for a while. Just depends on how much you love car audio/competitions/music etc.

Yes i know how to paint wood...i used to paint resto work ..i know diff surfaces.not everyone does ..i was just stating that 90% of ppl who paint mdf dont take the time to prep the surface and it ends up looking like *** as well as covering with carpet looks better amd is alot more forgiving and less time consuming covering a big flat wall
