View Full Version : 2005 Buick Rainier Build Log

06-10-2013, 02:18 PM
Well, the time has finally come. I'm starting my build on my front stage, as well as my sub stage. Going for a mostly factory location SQ oriented tight budget setup, that is still able to get a little bit loud. Updates may take some time since I have to wait for things to come in, as well as save up for a few too.

The Car
It's a 2005 Buick Rainier CXL with a 4.2i6 Vortec and AWD. During this process, I'll be lowering it 2-3 inches with Belltech drop struts and springs, DJM upper a-arms, Sphoon Panhard bar, and DJM sway bars.
Current Modifications:
Plasti-Dipped trim and wheels.
6000k HID's in lows and fogs.
Roof rack delete.
Leveled rear suspension.

To start with, I'll be making, very soon, a vinyl-wrapped enclosure with stained hardwood baffle for 2 E8v3's tuned to 35Hz.

Plans are as follows:
Head Unit:
JVC KD730BT. When I have the money, I'd like to go to a Pionner 80PRS, but this is what I have and it's god for now.
Sub Stage:
Currently, I have 1 Alpine Type-S 12" in a sealed box, but that's getting replaced with 2 E8v3's ported at 35Hz and wired to 1 ohm.
Hifonics BXi 610 - Like the head unit, I plan to replace this down the line. I've had this amp for a while.
Front Stage:
Currently, I've got stock Bose 3.5" speakers in dash and Bose inverted mid-sub bass woofers in the doors, but the following will be replacing that.
MB Quart DKE 3.5" speakers in factory dash location
Alpine Type-R tweeters in A-Pillars
Sundown NeoPro 6.5's in the doors
Type-R tweeters and NeoPro's will be run off a Sundown SAX 100.4D actively, and MB Quart DKE 3.5's will be run off the front channels of a Kicker KX 600.4
Rear Fill:
Alpine Type-R 5-1/4" midbass woofer running off the rear channel of the Kicker KX 600.4

I haven't updated at all so here's some things that changed:
One of my NeoPro's came to me defective, so I'm sending them back for the V2's. They'll be here mid August.
My mids and highs amps are now:
PPI BK800.4 for the tweeters and NeoPro's and Kicker KX600.4 for my MB Quart DKE 3.5" and Type R mids in the rear doors.
I got the box built (Pictures soon) for the E8V3's. It's 1.8 ft^3 tuned to 32Hz and they'll be running off my MB Quart ONX1.1000D

So The New Plan:
Head Unit:
JVC KD730BT - Eventually a DEH 80PRS
Sub Stage:
2 E8V3's in a 1.8 ft^3 box tuned to 32Hz
MB Quart ONX1.1000D
Front Stage:
MB Quart DKE 3.5" in the factory dash locations off Kicker KX 600.4
Sundown NeoPro V2 6.5" in the doors off PPI BK800.4
Alpine Type R Tweeters in A-Pillars off PPI BK800.4
Rear Fill:
Alpine Type-R 5-1/4" midbass woofers in the rear doors running off the rear channel of the Kicker KX 600.4

Waiting on Sundown Audio to ship me NeoPro V2's.

Tweeters are in! I don't have pictures of them inside the car yet, but they'll come soon.

My NeoPro V2's should be here by the end of the week, or early next week.

Picture of my side tweeter in. I took this picture for GMTNation because I saw a Trailblazer towing a Trailblazer.

Sides of the box are wrapped in vinyl. Stained wood soon to come.

I still have tons of vinyl left. What should I use it for?

Also, thinking about painting the inside of my headlights like this AWESOME Rainier. What do you think?

Is the suv wrapped? Looks awesome!

Thanks! Nope it's just gold paint and plasti-dip. Trying not to go over the top, but it's hard not to!

Got any more pics of the vehicle?

Got any more pics of the vehicle?

Yes I do. Here's a few for ya that I took the other day. Are there any certain angles you'd like to see? I can snap a few more for you if you want. And my apologies for the delayed reply. I just got the first coat of stain on the baffle piece.

I will be in Erie, PA for a competition tomorrow. Here's the flyer if anyone wants to come by. My build isn't finished, as I'm still waiting on my NeoPro V2's from Sundown, however, I'm still going to do some demos and stuff, since I have my old speakers still in where the Neos will be going.

Here's the flyer:

I went to the competition in the flyer above and scored a 70 in Street SQ without my NeoPros and got a fancy little first place medal.
Wednesday, I had surgery, so haven't been able to update, but my NeoPro V2's are here! If the pain killers work today, I'll get them popped in the doors. These things are beasts, even compared to the V1's, which were pretty burly themselves. Can't wait to hear how they sound!

The NeoPro V2's have been in now. I have them actively crossed at the amp, at 60Hz and 4kHz and are running on 90 watts. My tweeters are playing from 4kHz up and run off 75 watts. I crossed the Neos low with the subs to help with imaging, so the lower midbass frequencies don't drift toward the back with the sub-bass. It seemed to do just the trick. The kick drums sound like they're coming from your chest, while the upper frequencies lay at about eye level. I got lucky, working with such a large vehicle, because it needs hardly any time alignment to get the staging right.

Even off half power, these NeoPro V2's get loud, and have an extremely clear tone from them. I had the V1's beforehand, and the sound was nice from them, but I believe the V2's sound slightly better. With my doors sealed, they have a nice warm low end, and the upper mids scream. I attenuated them slightly, but testing with my cheap RTA showed that they had a fairly flat response within the frequency range I have them playing on. For those who say PA drivers aren't any good for SQ, I'm gonna call you dead wrong. Just takes a bit more time to tune, which isn't a big deal in the great scheme of things. Spend the extra time for the extra amazement.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with the sound I have right now, but I do plan to go to an active-passive 3 way front stage, using CDT HD 320 components for my dash and A-Pillars to bring more of the midrange up to the dash, while still keeping the midrange and highs active with the NeoPros.

NeoPro V2's mounted in MDF baffle, and sealed to the stock grill with great stuff and insulation packed tight into the doors.

I did a layer all the way around the door, and then packed as much insulation into crevices as I could. Vibrations in the doors are SIGNIFICANTLY reduced.

I'm purchasing, from dbeez, CDT TW-25's to replace my Alpine Tweeters. Hopefully, soon afterward, I will get a DEH-80PRS.

Also, my birthday is tomorrow! :present:

Lowered it and put in my CDT TW-25's! Thank you DBEEZ!
