You sound pretty confident in your work. What type of paint was it and how difficult is it to spray candy? Also are you familiar with using a mid layer of pearl when you paint a car?

Well I have been spraying for 9 years now so Im a little confident. On the VW I used HOK paint. For the base I used silver, black, and lapis blue followed with 5 coats of candy colbalt and 5 coats of clear. I dont find candy hard to spray but I spray everthing as though it was candy just to stay in practice. Yes I am familiar with tri-stage paintjobs. I have the project pics of the VW if interested Ill also post a tri stage I did. Thanks JD

Yeah try to get some pics of the mid layer pearl. My dad doesnt really know how to spray it. He has heard to just spray everywhere, not even in a pattern, then someone else said to spray in a pattern. I would like to see some more of your work.

What kind of paint do you use for the interior panels? I was thinking about doing that but I've seen a couple of other peoples whose didn't come out very well. How do you prep them, and do the panels end up without the factory texture? Sorry, but one more question how does the candy hold up to extreme sun? I live in southern New Mexico and the sun here is SICK. It eats metallic paint UGLY. Just curious cuz I'd like to get some candy paint but I don't want to spend the $$ and have it ****** in 2 years. Looks great!

Thanks

Its real easy there are a few ways to achieve the look.
1] you can spray your base color then add some pearl to your first couple coats of clear the top it off with 2-3 coats of straight clear. This works fine but can get costly if you do allot of painting because you are using more clear. This is also not good for graphics because of the high build and tape edges.

2] the way I prefer to do it is to make a mixture of pearl and binder,"basically base coat without color in it just pearl." This sprays like a base coat, walk it like a candy the whole leanth of the car sometimes you may want to cross pattern If your not confident in your pattern overlap. This Is my preferred method also because it makes less build so you can use this for your ghost graphics real nice .

Ill get some more picks soon

I use regular auto paint for everything, Dupont or HOK mostly. Allot of peoples parts don't come out good, have texture or chip easy, lol sand ,sand and more sand. As far as how long candy will hold up in the sun , I am not sure ,I mean if you park anything you paint in the middle of the desert for a long period of time its going fade or something. Paint will last as long as the prep was done right and you take care of it. Candy does fade after time but it all depends how much sun your talking about. The better the clear the better the uv protection also. I have work that's 7 years old and still looks like it was just painted.

That's a cutlass in the background, what year? I have a 84' in the shop right now getting the bodywork done and me and my dad are gonna paint it. What do you know about the new Hot Hues PPG has out? Also the "binder" you were talking about, what exactly is that? You said a base with no color? Do you like using the Mid-Layer pearl? Any nice effects?

That cutty is an 85, I am building a fiberglass box for it right now, doing the insides and hope to paint it by the weekend. I have only used PPG a couple of times but they seem to have good products. When you make a color at the paint store you put in binder, flop control, and the pigment together to make a color. When you do a tri-stage or mid-stage you just use the binder and flop control mixed with pearl. You reduce this as if it were the normal base you use, then spray it over your base followed by your clear.

From what I can tell in the pics, your work looks awsome...

I love some of the new colors and paints that are avalible from companys like HOK, Dupont and PPG..

I have been exposed to painting at some level (my dad paitined a few hundred cars in our garage as I gew up) and I have always had some interest in painting.

Do you know of any sites that have a lot of info on leaning how to paint? I like to read and reseach alot, before I jump into something...

I am considering buying a mid sized compressor and a few guns to dabble around on the side, painting dashes, other interior parts, fiberglass enclosures and such....

I understand what you are talking about now. I don't know what the binder is and all of that but I can ask the paint shop about it. Is it harder to spray the binder or to spray with the pearl in the clear? You ever used gold pearl on top of a maroon base? I am planning on doing tan pinstriping and I need something to match my tan. Also whenever you get the cutlass done get some pics of everything. What color are you painting it? Also what kind of subs and such?

Thanks again...

I dont know what would be harder it would all depend on what is harder to you spraying base or clear. I have used gold over red before... Cant tell you what color the cutty is going right now. 2 10" solobarics and a concept amp for now though on the stereo.

The doorjambs look great on that VW! All the paintjobs I've had done were never that down and dirty (my doorjambs weren't painted at all) or that nice. How much should something that detailed run? Also, do you use an airless or a compressor? I'd also like to get into painting, just small time little things like interior pieces but I'm curious.

Ok I think I see. Sorry for all of the questions I just really enjoy looking at this stuff. Also which produces better results, the "binder" or just putting it in the clear? Do you double up on the pearl?

Somthing as detailed as the vw, about $1800 to start. I use a normal compressor.

No problem, I think the pearl in the midcoat "binder" looks better. It seems to give more flip. As for how much pearl thats up to you I always use more than they say but if you use too much it will look cloudy or the color wont flip as much.

I'll try to find out how to get the "binder" then. So how much pearl do you recommend? I was gonna use more because I want it to flip all of the time, not ust when the sun hits it at this angle or that angle. I guess like flip-flop paint but not that extensive. Hopefully it will turn out alright. We will be going to the shop sometime so I'll get pictures and post them. Also we are shaving the trunk key hole just to protect the system and give it an extra custom touch. Whenever you get that cutty done let me know.

Hey, i am for sure going to be in FLA the beginning of junes for like at least 10days. i have a 1992 dodge dakota ext. cab truck. What would be a general price (i wouldn't hold you to it or anything, just a ballpark range) of one solid color red. Like a price for flat red, and a price for a metallic red. My truck is just looking real ****** cuz of the paint, i don't need anything near show quality, just want to make it look better and more acceptable instead of cracked/flaked off paint here and there. Obviosly it's old, i'm gonna keep it till it dies...just want it to look better. LMK man, or hit me up on AIM:ngbd13 and we can talk. thanx. peace

Just tell them you are painting a tri-stage paint job and you want the second stage without pearl in it because you want to add your own. How much start with it up to you I start at 2 teaspoons per quart, spray some test pannels first. Each coat can greatly alter the final apperance.

Its really hard to give a quote without a pic, especially when you say it has chipping paint. That usually means it needs to be stripped. Do you want inside the bed sprayed or the door or hood jams? Any dents? I don't touch any thing for less that $800. If that helps any but let me know more details cause your truck would me more anyway, thanks JD...

That is exactly what i'm talking about.

Do u have any 22" deepdish ones?
Also was thinking of getting either

Chrome spike white rim
or
White back spokes, front chrome spokes, rest chrome
or
White spokes chrome rest.

If u have any of these already can i see pics.

The truck i'm trynna get is a 2002-2003 Suburban.

I might as well tell u what else i'm trynna do see if u can do it.

Want to fabricate a rear spare tire swing holder so i can free up space underneath for more air tanks.

I want the rear to be motorized, the gate and maybe even the rear tire holder

I'm gonna do the sub enclosure n wiring n ****,
but was curious if u could like mold a 10" 16:9 monitor in the dash.

Also do you do interiors?

Let me know which of these u can do.

I should be getting the truck around july/august so will come down there n stay even help if needed as much as i can.

Don't have to gimme prices right now, just let me know.
