View Full Version : envoy build - ssa 10" gcon

i started this up in the SSA's topic section but figured i would start up an actual build log. the plans were to originally put the equipment into the s10 i had but i traded it off before i could even start the build.

equipment includes
1 - 10" ssa gcon d2 sub
1 - ppi black ice series 1300.1D amp

going in a 2006 gmc envoy
will be building a semi stealth box for the passenger side rear cargo area. box will be right around 1 cube(slightly bigger) and tuned @ 34 hz with a 3" port.

well anyways it has begun... didnt get where i wanted because my drill wasnt charged and died on me. also the blue painters tape i bought wont stick to the plastic panel so i will either have to try another brand of blue tape or come up with another option... anyways here is the start of what i hope will be a nice box.

oh and the kickers i didnt install... they came with the truck so once i finish this build they will be up for sale with the kenwood amp that is powering them. i also need to get rid of the HU that came with it and upgrade(truck came with a jensen 7" flip out with BT, nav, usb etc..... nothing wrong with it just it blocks my ac vents lol)

yeah im hoping i can get some decent sound out of it..... i opened up that cubby area to try and get more space for the sub(going to make a mold of it) sub will be place directly in front of the cubby hole and the port on the opposite way of the box facing into the cargo area.

well this thing is almost ready to start glassing the mold.... just gotta lay down some foil and tape to hold it up then can glass... hopefully i will be able to get a layer or two done saturday....

anyways i had a idea of doing the back wall wood and just molding the cubby to it as pictured below but i scratched that idea after trying to get it to line up and the one end breaking on me. so with that said the only mdf will be the base and trying to possibly have a small top piece but we shall see....

the back wall i tossed to the side

Instead of tape everywhere, I use tin foil with tape on seams. Covers easy, no gooey tape mess, fiberglass sticks just fine, mold pops right out.

looks good....

my next step is to lay down foil then start the mold. how may layers did you lay down before popping the mold off and trimming?

Not many, 4 or so. You might want to do more, but I dont think it needs to be 1/2 thick or anything crazy, especially for a piece with a lot of curves. If you have big flat areas and are worried about flex, you can use mdf in those places or fibergass some rope in for structural support.

well not much done or update since its pouring and cold here today in Jax, FL

anyways i wasnt going to let that stop me on making some headway on this project so i brought the foil out and did my thing

also i started shaving my emblems on the truck.... had to do some wetsanding and buffing to get rid of the shadow. anyways here is a before and after of the drivers side(still gotta do the rear gate and passenger's side....need fishing line)

Foil is always the way to go...much faster and easier to work with for sure. Just be sure to tape any/all seems.

My buddy has one of those trucks...they are nice trucks and his loved systems.

thanks... if only the weather would work with me so i can start glassing. yeah im loving the truck so far. do miss my s10 though but this truck will be slowly built up to what the s10 was if not better. biggest part i miss is parking and laying my truck out.....the voy will be at that point come next year though.

so i didnt get anymore done to the box besides the foil layout ready to go. instead the sun came out just enough so i finished up removing the emblems all the way around the truck, gave those spots a nice wetsand and buff(now nice an smooth) and finished the truck off with a nice wash.....

enjoy

hopefully will have at least a layer or two done in the next few days....at least get the mold started before i go on vacation here in a week(will need the truck to vent the smell before hand lol)

well here is the cubby done with at least 1 layer.... was testing out the mix ratio of the resin and hardener to see if i got it right(using new stuff i havent used before....so far so good. hopefully it just drys right). tomorrow i will hit the rest of the areas needing its first layer and may hit the cubby again for its second.

By the way, nice job on the de-badging. I removed mine on my Grand Prix, I actually used a blowdryer and fishing line, then took the remaining gunk off with a nice coat of alcohol and then waxed the sh*t outta' it. :)

Iirc it's got air bags from the factory and he isn't adding but maybe 100lbs of equipment anyway. That car is designed to carry 5 200lb people and tow 5-6000lbs I doubt it needs any rear suspension work

well nothing crazy today..... got the base molded to the mold. did 2 layers and inbetween the layers i pour extra resin the vally. probably will do 1 more layer to be sure and then on the back side shoot sum foam in little cracks here and there then smooth out. i also added another layer to the cubby hole area and the flat back surface. i could probably stop but want to be sure it good. be my first box where its almost completely glass. when i come back from vcay and bills are paid think im going to invest in a dremel to cut the remaining edges off and then start on my speaker ring and wrapping this thing to be glassed.

anyway snap a few pics.....

Yeah its not a monster install and my model has just springs in the back no bags(not yet at least lol)

If it does sag, you can use tahoe springs in the rear to level it out. Alot of us GMT guys use them for about a 2 inch lift in the back. If you're going to lower it, KBEE Coilovers are the way to go on our cars, but you're going to need modified upper A-arms and probably an adjustable panhard bar. Tony as TBSSowners is the guru on the suspension of these cars, so if you plan on doing anything crazy, I suggest talking to him first. If you're doing bags, you'll need to cut a channel for the axle to fit into when lowered. At about a 3-5 inch drop, you'll smack axle if you don't.

SIDE NOTE:
I saw in your signature that you're using the stock alternator. On GMT360's, they are good for 150amps. I've been told not to exceed 2000 watts without upgrading, so I'd look into a new one, or dual mounting and rerunning a new belt. Make sure the alt spins in the right direction though.
If you knew this already, I guess just ignore me.

beau m..... yrs I'm sure I want to do a glass front. I'm a glass junky. I'm going to round the edges n the speaker ring will come flush with the edge of the base. I plan on painting this box.

skoot.... yeah Idt I will get sagging n Ive been reading up on bagging the truck n plan on laying the truck out on 22s. I know it will required quite a bit of modding to do so which is y it most likely end up at a shop to do so. as far as the alt I didn't know the stock rating. still learning. I'm only be running 1300w rms for right now

If you have any questions about these trucks, let me know and I'll do my best to help you out. I had a Bravada for 6 years, and now I've gone to the Rainier, so I've well educated myself in the GMT360's wiring, body, and drivetrain. Good luck with the build! Looks like it's gonna be awesome!

sorry for the dusty pics but man does the router make alot of saw dust lol. it has a port for a shop vac but dont have one of those yet.
also im thinking about making another ring to help with the mounting surface of the sub...give it alittle thickness for the screws to hold onto something...

other than this ring not much more done. need to make a supply run for more brushes which i will do tomorrow or so.

Looking great man!

Yeah definitely make another ring below that one, thats a REALLY small amount of wood to keep the woofer in place. As for bagging a Voy, look at Ridetech (Air ride technologies). They make some killer stuff and reliable. I got a Full FBSS air ride setup with 4 Viair 480's, 8.5 gal tank, 1/2" airlines and 8 1/2" valves. RE6 bags on the rear, air ride technologies Shockwaves single adjustables up front. Dakota Digital 4+1 guage for 4 corners and tank pressure, cant go wrong with that setup.

I use to have ART air bar for my s10 I had. the voy will mostly be custom when bagging since there aren't any "kits" for it. should be a good time n process that I can't wait for

Goo gone n fishing line..... I spray alittle goo gone near the top of the badge let it sit for a few seconds n the take the fishing line and move from one side of the badge to the other until its off then goo gone the rest of the residue off. Not a hard process....just take your time.

ok so i started to sand this bad boy and did a test fit as well.... my only issue with the test fit was port issue. the big *** elbow i have doesnt go in place now. it did before i wrapped it so im thinking it might have shifted alittle during wrapping but not by much. so now i gotta see if i cant find a different less bulky elbow or i may have to step down to a 2" port :( other than that everything is going good with fitment.

just have to get some rca extensions and then mount the sub and it is ready to go.

Idk what you're talking about it looks pretty **** nice to me.

Also if you end up using RCA extensions (which I would advise against) make sure you cover the connection between the two. If the outer metal of the plugs or female/female adapter touch the chassis they can induce noise...ask me how I know ;)

its my first paint job using a gun so it was a learning process plus I kinda wish it had more shine but whatcha going to do since it is a single stage urethane.
as far as the extenders, I wish I didn't have to use them but the rcas don't reach my amp.... only need like a foot or so to make them reach...was going to electrical tape the connections to make sure they don't touch anything as well as not come loose by accident lol

Don't be lazy and do it right. Buy some longer rca's and rerun them. You be happier in the long run.

Otherwise, looks pretty good and it looks like it fits good.

My thoughts as well but if it's only for a sub he probably won't notice any difference. I wouldn't do it for mids/highs though...

so the idea for the amp is getting scratched at the moment. just going to mount it just behind the rear seat on the driver side. going to wait til i get my second amp for the doors and rerun all the wires and mount the amps for good then....temp for now.
