Hi, I have a 2007 Toyota Sienna minivan and wanted to paint the back window and the two middle and rear side windows on each side opaque black (basically all windows behind the front driver seat). I want to do this instead of tinting since it will be cheaper, and perhaps legal in all 50 states?? I know complete black out tinting on these windows is not legal in many states (except it is legal in my state of California), but I am hoping opaque paint will be. I travel to different states a lot. I want complete black out for privacy purposes.

So I have a few questions:

1) Is painting your windows black (as opposed to tinting) legal in all or most states?

2) Will the paint chip or flake off?

3) Will the results look bad?

4) Will cops mistake black paint for window tint in those states where it is illegal, and pull you over?

5) Is paint hard to remove should I decide to take it off?

Thanks!

Seriously?

Come on dude, don't be ridiculous. Of course it will look bad, you're painting your **** windows! Why would this be legal if black out tint is illegal in a certain state? The whole legality/illegality of tinted windows revolves around the amount of light it lets through. 0% light transmitted through is 0% light transmitted through. And I'd hope a cop would pull you over just to make you feel dumb for painting your windows.

How about getting some black poster board and having a little arts n' crafts project. At least you could rip it off once you realize that anything but tint will look like complete ****.

I guess you dumb f***s have never seen a cargo van. Some state allow the rear window of vans and trucks to painted/blocked whatever you want to call it.

Try plasti-dip, other people have used this for their windows when they have a wall in the car and you can peel it of when you want to.

In Ohio the front 2 windows have to be 50% or higher, the rest of the windows can be blacked out. As far as how it looks, thats a different story.

It might not look good from the inside but from outside your windows will just be black, i dont see how it would look bad from outside?

Wow, lot of hate on this board. It's also strange that this board had no problem with painting the windows black a few years ago:

http://www.caraudio.com/forums/car-performance-repair/454404-what-best-way-black-out-car-windows.html

But now you do. Talk about being h-y-p-ocrites!

For the record, I don't care if I can see out of the rear, and rear and middle sides at all. It's hard to see out with black out tint at all, or any dark tint at night. So what's the difference if I paint them black? Plus California law simply specifies you have to have two side-view mirrors if the rear window is tinted (which I have), and allows 100% blackout in any window behind the driver.

I want total privacy in the rear compartment. I don't want anyone to be able to see in (I also have a black shower curtain which I will hang behind the front seats so no one can see in from that position). I simply had the idea of painting it rather than pay $500 or so for two layers of tinting to achieve total black out. I don't have a lot of money, but the windows need to be blacked out in the next month. I also thought painting, as opposed to using tint, might be legal in all states.

Thanks ewadz3006. I guess if painting the windows black is legal in all states, but if cops in other states pull you over anyway since they don't realize it is paint, that kind of defeats the purpose of using it. But it's still cheaper than tint!

Also thanks mazdakid, SourDeez, brooklynjoy2008, and David0002 for your help. I like the idea of plasti-dip that you can peel right off!

I got told by a stsate police officer that it was legal in pa to have tint up to drivers head. As long as there is rear view mirrors. About a month later i get a fine in erie for tint. After telling him what the state boy said, he told me that if me and my state police friend want to learn about the law come talk to him.
Then went back to the statey and told him that, he replied I'm sorry dude were not all aszholes but the city guy "is" wrong.

Long story short, i tried to fight it but lost. Judge basicly told me i was doing something wrong and needed to pay restitution.

Cops can and will wright you up for whatever they want. Weather it really is the law or not. Remember its your word against theirs, and you are a lowly scumbag law breaking piece of sh^t that deserves whatever they get.

Wow, I just looked up the PA state law regarding tinting, and you are right. It is a big mess:

PA Window Tinting Law, Statutes, and Regulations (http://www.berksweb.com/users/dmv/tint/)

Glad I don't live in that state anymore. And thanks for the warning.
