View Full Version : Revisiting the X-8 : New Thread

Our prior unit had extensive supplier issues to the point where we've just had to write off all of that work and tooling.

In any event... I decided to re-visit the X-8 idea and base it on our SA-8 v.2 frame tooling.

The first challenge was to make a GREAT spider for a 2.5" coil on an 8" woofer... which is difficult and we used extensive software optimization before tooling. Fortunately our basket allows a spider about 10mm wider than pretty much all other 8" frames out there.

Since the spider is the main challenger we had that tooled first and then built up a test bed to test with :

* Former was too tall / big in diameter for the SA-8 dust cap to work so I had to use an SA-12 dust cap; which came all the way out to glue onto the surround edge.

* SA-12 Motor

* We had an adapter machined to mount the motor; I decided to have some extras made for some brave DIY folks that may want to make a similar project.

* There is the beastly new spider tooling -- this thing worked great !

Sundown X-8 Spider Test - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qcDrN5avP4)

I was able to test the X-8 spider with an SA-12 motor / coil and SA-8 v.2 cone and surround. The X-8 will have it's own unique motor, cone, and surround for production. Those parts aren't done yet and I wanted to test the spider so we built it like this for now http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum//public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png

I am very pleased with the spiders excursion capacity and linearity. I will get some Klippel measurements done on it soon as well to verify... my "push the cone Klippel" indicates that the spider has a very linear compliance to it for quite a bit of travel in both directions -- anxious to see the actual plots http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum//public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png All of the computer optimization on this spider definitely paid off with the result.

That's freaking sick....

Once I get it in a box I will get some music videos -- our QC test track doesn't really reflect how it will actually sound. We just use it for this type of test as it has many varying frequencies and is pretty hard on any driver.

If I was into 8's these would be up near the top for sure. Your new woofers that are yet to be released are lookin mighty fine!

i did a couple sa8's with the sa12" motors but diff baskets. i did have one guy shredd a spider on one because with over 1k of power in a box over 1 cf net only lasted 4 months, lol.

looks like you got a nice spider to do the job ;)

Purely theoretical about 34mm one-way ; but in real life it is limited to more like 29-30mm or so.

The surround for the SA-8 v.2 isn't quite up to par for what the final X-8 motor can deliver either (and it's a big surround for an 8) -- so we are also tooling a bigger surround for it as well.

What is the box requirement for these? Similar to the v2 sa8's?

Boxes will be similar to the SA-8 v.2 , yes.

We are currently tooling the surround for these and having prototype motor made to test the final product... perhaps within 30 days or so for a final sample.

It depends on how you define better -- these will handle more power, yes.

So what's the word on these? They look sick. Prices? When will they be out?

The surround tooling just finished a few days ago; so I am waiting on a full cone body with surround, additional spiders, and the production motor to test a final unit. Once I do that and verify it's all good I will introduce the pricing.

So what is the difference between the x-8 and the sa-8 v2? And what does that mean for the simple minded basshead like myself? Haha :)

Better power handling and more motor force

Hey Jacob will the X-8 mounting depth be hugely different from the SA-8? If I could drop an X8 into my SA8 box that would be even more of a reason to get one.

Thanks!

It is deeper, yes -- will be 3/4" or so more depth on it.

Oh that's not to bad, how much free space do you need behind the driver? I assume an 1-2 inches.

I just put up a photo on our Sundown Audio Facebook of a working prototype; not 100% final to production on looks but functionally equivalent.

Once we get it in and test it I can talk about ETAs and pricing.

Sorry to jump off-topic a bit here, but When will I be able to get my hands on ANY of the new X series or Zv.4 subs? a 12" in particular ;)
