How wide does the piece of wood need to be before i make my 45 degree angled cuts on it?

3" is typical... seen some 2" ones also

you making bracing? if you need thin strips that have 45's, work on the master piece, and make cuts with the blade on the angle to begin with. if you need to reverse the angle, flip the board.
