I have this HU Sony CDX-GT510 CD receiver plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files at Crutchfield.com (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-IUlD5L51Pn0/p_158GT510/Sony-CDX-GT510.html#details-tab) I know its not a good HU, but I want to be sure what I buy will be a solid upgrade on this.

Now that is extremely vague. Probably a JVC Kenwood or Pioneer, and am almost sure I need it under 200$.

Thanks for any help guys.

Looks like anything you buy would be a solid upgrade from that.

What do you want the HU to have? Maybe aux input for a mp3 player? high volt pre-outs?

You are only almost sure you need it under $200? If you look into buying something used I think you could get something decent for that price range.

Its hard to decide.. I could get the KDC X695, 496 and the Pioneer 8400 all for between 140-150$... or the KDC 396 for only 100$.

So I guess, why would I spend more for the other three? And out of those three why would I pick one over the other?

Just need to check out the specs on each unit, and see whats best for your needs,..these are only recommendations to you of what i,or others have,or have experienced with for your price range, that can be considered.Do a comparison, and get the best choice, and what you need for your money.:D

Thanks for all the input I have narrowed it down to 2 units.

Pioneer DEH 7400 and the Kendwood KDC X396

I am hung up because they both have a few different features but I am not sure what is more worth while.

The Kenwood HAS speaker size and position settings but DOES NOT have a HPF.

The Pioneer HAS a HPF and LPF but DOES NOT have speaker size and position settings, the pioneer also has an interesting MIXTRAX feature which I would like since I always shuffle my music and Apple's shuffle *****.

Are you opposed to buying used? You could get some fantastic great condition used decks for under $200.

No not really. I just kinda want it now. So that makes it harder to buy used. There are a few PRS 880s for sale, but I don't know if i want to spend 200$ however if I did that is probably what I would go with.

Best unit hands down is the new pioneer DEH-P9400BH, i challenge anyone to check the specs. Its offers more then any other unit for 200bucks, there 180 on ebay right now

2 5v rear usb ports- charges phones and can power an external HD
aux port
built in HD radio
built in BT
24 bit DAC
4v preouts
5 band EQ
advanced song search engine making sorting threw 500gigs of media easy
the list goes on

Ive been researching HUs for the past 6months for my upgrade lol other then that the 80prs are the best but there 350+. If you want to go a lil cheaper the 7400 by pioneer is good, also any JVC arsenal series is great

HD radio BT stuff like that means nothing to me. I am just looking for a solid unit that will make the most out of what I have, the only "fancy" thing that is important to me is ipod control.

Buying a 75$ HU worries me a bit... However on paper it looks solid.

The 2.5v pre-amp voltage vs the 4v on the other units wont make a big difference?

I wouldnt say so honestly, i have 2v outs on my current alpine and they work fine for me. But you shouldnt worrie JVC makes great stuff, they have never been expensive

Depends some amps specifically Old school ones need high voltage. Personally I wouldn't want to upgrade to an aftermarket head unit and get 1v higher voltage than my stock stereo. I recommend the higher voltage head units because it makes the gain setting much lower hence less distortion percentage. Do what you want.
