I am going to start off and confess I am not an audiophile. In fact my Sony head unit and speakers will probably get me laughed out of Wal*Mart nevermind this forum.

I am however a certified automotive technician, big into repair, aftermarket performance and tuning. I want to flush out my skill set, make me more valuable in the job market. I have decided to start by getting my MECP certifications. I know wiring up speakers, fixing broken wires, putting in head units isn't even the tip of the iceberg for this test.

I was hoping people here can lead me in the right direction, reading materials and the such, to prepare myself to add this skill set to my resume. Tell me how much it matters that I haven't installed remote starters, alarms or lock poppers. Is the MECP study guide enough to prepare for this?

I am not entirely interested in learning about what is the best brands, as I never plan on being on the sale side of things, even if you guys can introduce me to stuff that would blow my socks off and that I never heard of before.

Your help and guidance is greatly appreciated.

So I have read every single MECP thread that looked pertinent in the 6 pages of search results that came up. And...the only thing I am certain about is that there is way too many naive people with keyboards.

The purpose of getting an MECP certification has nothing to do with your level of ability or knowledge. It's exactly the same as ASE. When people pick a shop because of the ASE certifications only, not only are they idiots, but they are doing exactly what that person who took that test wanted them to do, give their money to them.

I had 5 ASEs passed before I even graduated from school in automotive service, and the only reason I didn't have the nifty card was because I needed 1 more year of experience, same with the paper and the patch. But it sure looked good on my resumes. It didn't matter that in my first week I completely forgot to take the inner wheel bearings out of the old rotors on a GMC Safari, because I was ASE certified.

That's the whole reason I am going for this certification, not because I plan on installing alarms, but because the hiring manager will look at my typical resume with all my ASE certifications and basically an exact copy of the other guy's resume and throw a dart at them, and hire whichever sticks. Now instead, he will see I have an MECP certification and think to himself "I have no effing idea what that is, but it's something else I get to claim to have at my oil change shop."

MECP is about being more marketable and that is what makes it worth it, when it gets me a job over the other 100 people that applied for the same job in this economy.

Looks like just reading the guide a few times will get me what I need. Considering the fact that not knowing Ohm's law by the time you graduate high school speaks volumes...
