View Full Version : Repair Agreement between knightrider2k6 and Spooney
02-04-2012, 02:16 AM
knightrider2k6 and I have agreed on terms to have his amps sent to me for repair. The amps in question are two Kicker ZR1000's. knightrider2k6 will send the amps to me where I will estimate the cost of repair free of charge. After the estimate is ready I will contact him with the price of repairs and see if at that point he still would like to go on with the repair. If he declines to have the amps repaired there is still no cost for the estimate and the amps are returned to him at his cost. If he accepts the repair estimate I will request a deposit in an amount equal to that of the cost of the repair parts. After receipt of this deposit parts will be ordered and the amps will be repaired. After the amps are repaired one further payment to cover my labor/time put into the amps will be requested. Upon receipt of this payment the amps will be shipped back to knightrider2k6 at his cost. When the amps are received by knightrider2k6 I request that they be tested/installed within one week and if there are any further issues at that time that I be alerted promptly.
****This is the last repair that I am accepting from the forum for a while. Anyone else who asked and was turned away I apologize but this deal has been in the works for weeks now. I simply don't have the time to help everyone. Please do not ask . I need some time to work through all the local amps I have here as well as these two and with my current work schedule my repair time has been cut to almost nothing. The only reason I have accepted these amps for repair is because knightrider2k6 was willing to wait up to a month to have these looked at. ************

May we know what was wrong with them?

These particular amps have a 1 amp smd fuse soldered to the underside of the board that protects the amp's rca grounding circuit if a power wire touches the heatsink or the speaker wires short. That fuse was blown in both of these amps and causing all kinds of terrible noise issues and oscillation . I am going to make a small modification so this fuse will now be accessible from the top side of the board so that if this ever happens again you can change the fuse without pulling the board from the heatsink. Also going to change the fuse to a more readily accessible atc fuse instead of a not so common or easy to find smd fuse. While in the amps I am also going to touch up any iffy looking solder joints, resolder a few key known problem areas , replace the kapton insulator tape and put in some fresh heatsink compound. May even give the heatsink a bath if I have the time.

Just playing the waiting game on parts right now. Had to order in some transistor insulators that this amp requires that I don't have in stock. When they show up I am hoping to have the first amp buttoned up within a day or two.

First amp back together and doing some initial testing. Tons of clean power. Seems to be working just fine :)

Starting to tear down the second one and do some testing on it tonight. This one has a channel that is not working. Not sure what else is going on beyond that as I have just barely scratched the surface on this amp. Last zr series amp I had with an issue like this ended up being some bad solder/contacts on the crossover card/preamp board.

always keepn me updated. man this guy kicks ***. thanks for the updates man.

Got the other channel working with some resoldering of the little vertical board that the crossover cards plug into. New fuse added in this one as well. Basically needs a little more solder touch up and to be put back together . Might be done this evening if I can keep my eyes open that long LOL
