View Full Version : Box to get the most out of 2 SA8's

Ive never played with 8"s until now and in the past have always used a plain ol' ported box for all my installs but this time, if I have the room, would like to go with something to help these woofers perform.

The drivers will be hooked to a 1500w amp and will be behind the back seat of my ram. Can face the subs up or forward, same with the port. This is for SQ however I would still like for them to play pretty low if possible. I listen to alot of different music (not much rock).

My current box is 36" wide 14" tall and 12" deep. It was for a RE SX 12". I have a little more wiggle room, mostly width. If I go taller with the box I would not be able to go as deep because of he way the seat slants backwards.

If a plain jane ported box is good enough, I can build and design my own however if a box such as a 4th order were better and I have the room for that, I would be willing to pay someone to design that.

Guess Im just looking for opinions on this since I have no experience with any other box designs.

I could also get a smaller amp if needed. I know box size will be relevant to power handling.

give them 1.5-1.7 with a single 4'' aero.

we had a pair in 2 cubes with the single 4'' and it was doing 142 at 40hz in the back of a chevette.

I think you would do alright in a ported box. I actually did a 4th order for 2 8"s in my F150 ext cab, wasn't anything terribly desirable.

Which ways are your sub and port firing currently?

Both sub and port forward. Basically into the read of the seat but there was room for movement.

I have never heard these so I can't compare the two. Sorry man.

Have you thought of doing subs and port up, or subs up and port to the side?

subs up port to the side may be the easiest to do. should also yield some killer results.

Trucks are really finicky. I really wouldn't recommend a transmission line, chambered t-line, or any variant of a rear loading horn. Esp. with the SA8's. These subs, in your application, will probably do best with a "standard" old boring ported box.

Subs up port to the side is a good place to start. Stay away from facing subs/port either forward or back. Only luck I've had with that configuration is for a burp box, subs forward port up.

I thought about subs up and can do that now with the 8"s. No way I could have done it with my 12".

I would do subs up or forward, port sideways. That's what's been the loudest in my car, anyway.

Was going to say the same as Pyro..

in a single cab s10, sub forward behind driver port to the side, behind passenger, .7cu/ft tuned to 37hz 12"^2 of port, is loudest @ 32hz. It's only a slight peak but it sounds really good. I've got -1db @32hz on my eq to get a somewhat flatter response.
Would a bigger cab get you lower? These things dont need much space. I gave it all i had(space wise) and am pleased, although i wish i could of done a little bigger tuned lower.

Well I started a box today to try out.

It's 1.5^3ft @ 32hz. Each sub will be getting about 550w. Gotta finish the box and install it tomorrow if the weather holds out here and report back with some findings :)

Heres a quick crappy pic of one sitting next to my old RE SX 12"

Its sounding pretty good though. Nice tight bass with enough low end. I would like it to get a little lower but that may come with a new box design in the future.

How are you liking the overall output? I still have yet to drop in my pair, looking forward to it though. I've already gotten some nasty low end out of one.

1.5ft^3 at 32hz should give you some good low end...would you mind PMing me the design/specs for your box?

i had one tuned to 34 hz and i was suprised by the low end it produced. suprised everyone when i told them it was only one 8 lol

After listening to them more today I must say I am very impressed. Great sound quality with this box also.

Will do. Give me till tomorrow though. I'm on my phone right now. If you want PM me your number and I can text you a pic of the specs. I ended up using the RE box calc. tool. It has served me well in the past and did again this time. Just had to fudge the numbers to get the box in the shape I needed for the location and how I mounted the subs and wanted the port.

Yea I think it was just the songs I was listening to. After playing a few others on the way home, they do get low
