NewBox 4 NewBie...ME!

Looking for a little help here. I built a box for my two 12" IMPPS and they sound like crap. Bass is ok at ver low volumes, but as soon as you turn the volume up it sounds like S H I T. Im thinking either the subs S U C K , or the box is bad. When I built the box I didnt know anything about tuning, and cu ft , i just built a box to fit my car. DOH!


I still dont know anything about this stuff, other then apparently the box size and type make a difference. At this point id like to find out more info on various box designs, ported, non ported, and any other ones their might be. Perhaps someone can just point out the key differences. At this point anything is better then nothing.

My plan is..... if the box i built is way out of tune or whatever, rebuild a new box with the necessary enhancement and dimensions. If they still sound like crap then perhaps I just need a pair of new subs.

I dont see anything here describing the difference between ported, non ported, and i think its call band pass. Can anyone provide info on these different box types.

Sealed is your best all around box, especially for a starter, you can be out by a country mile before it will drastically effect your subs output. It handles a decent amount of power and plays clean across a wide range of frequencies.
A ported enclosure usually handles a little less power, it usually is tuned to a frequency by the port. It plays (generally - not always) louder bass response than a sealed box, especially in the lower frequencies up to the tuning point, at that point output generally falls off at a greater rate than sealed.
A bandpass box is like it sounds. It is OK at power handling, plays loud bass at specific frequencies (70 hz area usually) naturally gets rid of frequencies above and below the tuning point. It generally does not play the same low frequencies as a properly designed ported or sealed enclosure. This is a very dangerous box if done incorrectly, a great way to destroy speakers. If it is built bang on, with the proper speakers, to a dedicated task and used properly, the results can be astounding.
If you are new to boxes in general, rebuild your box to a sealed enclosure. Do you know how to measure for cubic inches / feet of displacement in oder to build your box. If I am not busy here tonight I'll be glad to help.
