Just checking in and wanted to say hello.

I'm here to read reviews and get a bit of knowledge before I redo my stock 4Runner speakers and add a sub.

Yeah I know pretty boring.

Just want to hear everything a bit better, I'm not looking to compete or wake the neighborhood.

Recently upgraded to an Alpine INA-W900, I'm very pleased with it but the stock speakers sound lousy.

Dealer/Friend has recommended Focal 165 VRS components for the front and 165 CVX for the rear.

Power via 2 Alpine PDX amps. Still deciding on one 12 or two.

Sub Recommendations?

Sealed or ported?

Thanks in advance,
Paulie

What's up yankee!

For your question, what kind of music do you mostly listen to?

Mainly jungle and breakbeats but hip hop, rock, and metal are all on the menu.

So do you want to have heavy bass or do you want more musical bass?

I want it heavy, but tight not sloppy.

Making sense?

What I mean is I don't want the bass to overpower the mids and highs. I'm only going with a 600watt mono amp and 150 to each door, so I don't think I'll be rattling windows or setting off car alarms.

What sub amp do you have and what's your budget for subs?

Planning on the Alpine PDX-M6, and I've got a flexible budget.

Thanks. What about the box setup? What do you recommend sealed or ported?

I would recommend ported. The output difference is substancial.

Are you a pirate?

Love 'em or hate 'em, I'm guessing you're with the latter.

No, Type R's are solid subs for beatn' around town. They last forever as long as you don't do dumb **** like have your box unloading or your bass boost set at a bajillion

The shop where I'm going to have everything done, actually recommended the Type R's.

They did have a single Focal 13 in a really small ported box (came that way from Focal) that sounded decent, but in the demo room everything sounded good. I guess I'll have some leeway to swap speakers and boxes in and out while I'm there, but there's the possibility of something that they might not sell, being better for my needs.

A few buddies are die hard JL guys and they're insisting that I should go with W7s but I think it's more than I need and the amp I have in mind would be too small to even drive one of them so....

JL is too expensive. You can find better for your money.

You should see the retail on the Focals for the doors! :waycrazy:

Yeah well he's got a set of used W7 10's that I can get for a buck a piece, but no guarantee. :suicide:

I wouldn't want to even guess. But I wouldn't spend more than $250 for my first set of speakers even if i had a ton of money; i'm assuming you'd be paying more than that. Ask around here, people will give you lots of good options and you can narrow your choice down from there. But if you have your install guy put in only equipment that you supply the quote might be higher than previously stated, if he had assumed you'd be buying products from him/her.

Install is gonna cost me a case of beer and dinner, but I have to help.

Paying a little more than $250 for the splits, and less for the co-axials. I just need to figure out the subs.
