was just browsing this site the other day, and I get a Java pop-up. Two days later, i'm re-installing Windows XP. I don't surf fucked up sites so I don't have to worry about VB viruses from **** sites and ****...I figure CA.com and MSNBC are pretty safe right?

FAIL. I got the virus from here.

So thanks Chris, for all the fun. :furious:

As everyone should already know, we're doing all we can to stop/prevent whatever is going on. We're using the latest VB software, so they do not even have a fix for it yet. We have also scanned the server several times and nothing is showing up. I've also contacted someone who deals with vb forums and they haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

That said, all I can suggest right now is using a good virus protection software, such as Norton or McAfee and don't download anything from this site until this is resolved completely. I myself haven't had any issues whatsoever from this site, yet...

I think the file name was like 18552 or close to it.
For windows vista and XP if you have restore points saved go to safe mode and restore to a past setting and it will erase it. After 20 minutes of messing with that thing trying to get it out it locked up my computer so I could only start in safe mode.

I'm trying to understand whats going on. So this is both a problem with members being infected with a virus AND someone being able to hack accounts and make changes? There is a new software update almost ready to come out, which should help. Still doing all we can to resolve it. Our hands are kinda tied, since the forum software company doesn't even have a fix for it yet, is the bad thing.

I've got McAfee here at home and I haven't gotten the virus here...it's usually pretty good about picking stuff up even when I download dirty torrents :P

Here is a post I put together. I basically compiled all the unbiased antivirus and firewall research I could find. Have a read through, look at the dynamic tests, detection tests, and removal tests. McAfee doesnt do so hot in comparison to other free AV vendors.

AVG will defend against it. I've got it installed now, and when I logged in earlier it popped up saying that a virus was trying to inflitrate my pc.

And Goob, the hacks are unrelated. I personally think its a mod gone mad. Of course, no correlation to the recently added mods right? In the 5 years ive been on this site, nothing like this has ever happened before.

I wish you would of thought out your mod choices better, and I don't think im alone on this.

I really dont think its a current mod gone wild. I will tell everyone that they need to have different passwords for each forum. Hint. Hint. Mods especially!

Per Mike, the "hacker" informed him that he hacked another site and obtained the passwords there for those that had the same usernames as here. This is a fairly typical exploit and doesn't take a lot of effort. :fyi:

Not really my point...my point is that if someone is posting that they know what the virus is, stop beating around the ******* bush and put up or shut up...if FagDouche (aka DaveInLA) knows what this virus is, then PM goob about it and how to get rid of it...fixed.

But I am starting to wonder if goob really even gives a ****....like I have already said, I'd be all over vBulletin about both the virus AND the "hacking" of the database....total bullshit. :fyi:

Ok guys, I didn't infect you with the virus. If I knew where it was I would make sure it gets deleted. But quit the blame game. Somehow VB allowed some virus to get into a page that some douche bag posted on the forum.

Dont you know how to track the infected pages and links?

I use Kasper, SPybot. As long as pop up blocker is on, no sweat....

"We're aware of malware activity on the site and the fact that a lot of virus programs have halted or warned visitors from coming to the site. We're working to get this problem resolved and get the site back to normal. I can assure you we're doing all we can and we apologize for the major inconvenience this is causing."

Two options one change from a crappy browser like IE to Firefox or google chrome

Or get a mac like I have and have it dual booted when I NEED windows.

Or start using anti malware instead of thinking just a virus protecting software is going to protect you from malware.
