View Full Version : 95 Grand AM build

05-11-2010, 12:16 AM
So school is finally over, the weather is finally starting to turn around and everything is looking good for a new build!

So to start things off here is the box I will be building the over all sizes are 30x36x17.5, this box is a master piece of shizzzon designs! (look him if you need help with a weird install in a small spot!) he cubics before displacement are like 7~ and after 6.5~ and tuning is 40hz (may change in the future)

Now here is my old box and as we can see the mdf soaked up the water like a sponge lol! so needless to say i had a leak issue also if you are interested here is a link to my old build.

Onto the bad parts in the trunk, also not shown the tail lights were leaking BAD and i had to reseal those puppies fast with a sealing agent!

Next item to talk about is the equipment which will be going in!

05-11-2010, 12:17 AM

I also deaded my trunk and installed a false floor! take a look

In this build I will be using 4 fans to help keep the sub amps cool as they will be hidden under the sub box, as I have taken out the spare tire and the thing holding the spare tire in the well.

other then that my last build was 144db's on 1-saz2000 this new build will be double the power and double the cone area! and maybe i will upgrade to a pair of saz2500 but we will see on that as nothing is set in stone.

Tomorrow (Monday may 10th) I hope to have the box finalized as in all pieces cut and nearly 100% done and sub holes will be cut out some time this week also.

I have also started my new job on Monday and I will be working 10-11/day so this build could be a while in the making lol!

keep in mind this is about 1-2days worth of work I don't work very fast i take my time and do it right and enjoy some beers! also any idea will be cool and anything you want to ask go for it! Other then that this build is completely done using birch 3/4! it is very very nice stuff to use and very easy to work with!

(time for Chinese, msg pumped food)

05-11-2010, 12:30 AM
nice job so far should be interesting to see what numbers you do

05-12-2010, 12:39 AM
very nice..

05-12-2010, 09:11 PM
well a little more progress today! i got nearly the whole sub box all done all i have to do now is cut my sub and port holes. also so everyone knows i lost a good close tool today.. my poor 20year old jig saw... tear... here is is RIP

now i also got around to laying out my sub woofer! onto the piece of wood! check it out! and yes the one is a little bit rusty and will need some fixing up!

onto the box please note the i will not be installing the front baffle UNTIL i get the box into my car as i know this will be nearly impossible to put into my car as it is now! so i will try to give my self a better chances at best! I am currently waiting on my JIG (or jasper as some ppl call them) to cut out my sub and port holes and that is due (finger yet again crossed) on friday! lol.

and incase you are wondering I did cut back the front baffle as a piece to the right was left on!

other then that tomrrow (thursday) I hope to pull out my seats and amp (sax100.4) again and getting ready to toss the box in friday or saturday depending on when i get my jig/ jasper in. in the mean time I need some help on my front stage here is a pic of my door pannel

this above section can actually come right out and those dimensions at max are about 19-20 by 13 tall

so any ideas would be good..

i am thinking about just taking that section out and building up MDF some how then mounting my speakers that way. as it stands i only have about 2.5inch of room of depth to mount with and if i build it out some i could get a bunch more in that area. I will be thinking about what to do with this area of the car. and yes before you ask I already have another pair of component speakers ready to pop into the front stage. as of right now i am waiting for a good idea!

but let me know what you guys thing and we can go from there

05-12-2010, 11:35 PM
That's a good amount of power, you have a HO alternator?

Nice build so far

05-12-2010, 11:50 PM
When are those saz2500d's coming out? If you are interested in a couple of saz3500d's let me know.

05-13-2010, 06:12 PM
yes i do have any H/O it is about 200-250amp

05-13-2010, 07:40 PM
looks nice. can't wait too see it finished!

05-13-2010, 10:01 PM
So I decided to finalize my amp rack, which is been placed in my spare tire well. and I thought i would take a picture and show you guys what it all looks like!

please note everything is screwed down and the fans are Velcro-ed down maybe tomorrow after work i will pop it in the tire well and mount it all and go from there!

let me know what you guys thing

05-13-2010, 10:20 PM
actually right now i am kind a in a stand still till i get my jasper so i will be able to cut out my sub and port holes! once i get those i am home free to put the box in!

and the jasper will be at my place on Monday!! so common monday! i am nearly done!

also i need some input from anyone and everyone!

Carpet or No carpet on the sub box?

05-14-2010, 01:21 AM
Paint the box.

05-14-2010, 09:59 AM
also i need some input from anyone and everyone!

Carpet or No carpet on the sub box?

I've always been a fan of a nice paint job, or vinyl. Carpet looks cheap to me

About your front stage, I think your headed in the right direction. Just cut a baffle then make your chambers. Please don't **** it up...I can see you have moderate fab skills so don't let me down by painting it bright blue or some stupid *** color that just stands out and says "look at me! I don't blend in!"

How do you like those nightshades? I can't get enough of how well they sound tuned low, and the output is just a added +

05-14-2010, 10:57 AM
looking good....

05-14-2010, 12:31 PM
does night shades are sooo [email protected]#$ ****.....nice build

05-14-2010, 12:45 PM
u r my idol...i have the same car same year....do u have the 2.3 or the 3.1??? Where did you get your HO alt????

05-18-2010, 09:22 PM
So i feel an update is in order now!

I gave my door panels to a buddy to do some fiber glassing for me! the idea is to get 2 sets of components in the front doors! (8 speakers total) and those will be done whenever and some of you may know him as Mike or Jalat over on CCA

I also finished cutting out my cuts aka the sub and port holes! i ALSO give the box a test fit!

so here you go enjoy and let me know what you guys think!

as you can see it ALMOST fits in with the rear seats STILL there! lol!

as can been seen once the rear seats are out i should be okay to get this in! I will have to flip it down!! and while it is up i will try to put the subs in!! i better get ripped in a hurry lol!

here is a pic of the box without the front on sure i screwed up on my hole location but meh it works out!

and another view of the box!

05-18-2010, 09:24 PM
now to answer some questions I love the NS!! they are awesome woofer!! but very heavy also!

also as for the fab job i got buddy who is going to fiber glass them for me then as for finishing them i will make them a dark or a color to match the existing colors in the car already!

once those get under way i will also post some pics fo them!!

again thanks everyone for the feedback!!

05-19-2010, 10:33 PM
so i did a few more things today! take a look let me know what you guys thing and what i can improve on! i know it looks mess and yes there is a ton of extra wire but that allows me to be able to pull the false floor out and not worry about my wiring!

and yes i also had time to finish a few other bottles! (the green ones in particular)

05-20-2010, 09:30 PM
Lookin pretty good

05-20-2010, 09:49 PM
Nice build! Looking forward to see it when its all done! Great work man!

05-21-2010, 08:17 PM
well today was met with epic failure!!

Me and Derek and his brother tried to get the above box into my car..and to sum it all up NO GO!!

SOB POS! I hate my like!

turns out the fist 1/2 of the box slides in like a peach then toward the rear of the car the whole thing slopes down on us... stupid grand am right up ticked me off for all the 2hours!

to remedy this issue i am going to switch the bottom piece of 3/4 to 1/2 birch and see what that does for me if anything!if that doesn't go i will have to try to switch the top half of the box also!

all and all this will be one hell of an accomplishment after it is all in!!

wish me luck tomorrow guys!

05-21-2010, 08:41 PM
***** to hear that news! GL!

05-21-2010, 08:58 PM
thanks i will let you know how it goes!!

05-24-2010, 12:22 PM
so i am going to use 1/2 on the bottom piece rather then 3/4 and i will now have to switch my 2-6inch ports for 1-10inch port! o joy! i can't wait!

05-24-2010, 12:26 PM
so on another note here is a few pics of my door panels! i have mike (jalat) doing them all up nice and pretty for me!!

05-24-2010, 02:22 PM
nice work man, tuned in :)

05-24-2010, 07:30 PM
thanks man!!

05-24-2010, 07:31 PM
so a new update is in order!

I replaced my bottom board with 1/2 (used to be 3/4) and the box slid right in!! who!

but now i have to make a 10inch port...out of a sono-tube, and this i will need some help doing so if anyone has experience iwth these please help me out or reference me to a site!

thanks everyone!

05-25-2010, 11:02 PM
so mike has gotten me some more nice pics!!

05-26-2010, 10:07 PM
well today was a success kind a lol!!

bad news first the false floor gave me all kinds of issues and wasn't very flexible at all. long story short the false floor was holding me up big time!!

the fans and wiring had to be moved back to the very rear of the trunk as the box had to slide in a bit more then i planned i guess i didn't take into account my stupid angle of my back seat! lol!

now the good news i cut the false floor down and screwed it to the bottom of the box that way i still get the same effect of a false floor... i hope!! ;)

the 11.5inch sono tube i picked up was to big lol opps! time to rethink that one!

o ya and i got the box into the car!!! YA

but my trunk wouldn't close due to the automatic trunk release being in the way so i had to move it!

at any rate here are some pics boo and or congratulate me either or enjoy!!

umm.. that loading wall is going to be odd..

ca.com in general is odd, I like it.

05-26-2010, 10:37 PM
ca.com in general is odd, I like it.

what you like and what its going to do is completely different..

its going to build pressure up in there and cancellation.. you should have atleast angled it some so it kinda pushes it out..

05-26-2010, 10:41 PM
you saying you think the sound will bounch off and return to the sub hench cancelling...

and angled will fix this ummm how to fix this... can i take a disk grinder to it and grind an angle on it.? or will that not be good enough?

05-26-2010, 10:46 PM
the BEST way to fix it would be pop the box out and take the threads out the sub panel out. cut that piece the sub panel rests on at and angle.. you will need to use good judgement on how close that back sub will be to the board.. it needs room for excursion.. you can invert mount it from the inside of the box though if need be.. which seems like what you were going to do anyways..

I would say test it out first though and if it does cancel out badly then fix it.. I don't have experience with a box like that so idk..

05-26-2010, 10:52 PM
okay thanks for the tip and recommendations!

okay i got a noob question for you how do you tell cancelling in a sub setup? just the lack of noise or a special noise it will make?

thanks agian

05-26-2010, 11:07 PM
If its quieter than expected pretty much, lots of excursion and no db's may mean cancellation....can't really say what to do, test it out!!!! I did something similar with some two by fours and mdf and made a loading wall out of my trunk. I didn't hear a large difference in output after putting it on top versus without it. So you may come out on top. If you're not satisfied try again!

this.. or if the subs aren't moving as much as they should the pressure may build in there not allowing as much excursion.. but it may be a big enough space to work just fine

05-26-2010, 11:12 PM
question can i slip a wedge in there? make one out of plastic or somrething to that exact size and side it in and see if i like it?

05-26-2010, 11:20 PM
ya you can do a board with a 1 inch tall piece at the end or w.e to make a 15 degree incline or so from the mouth of the opening all the way to the back

06-10-2010, 09:54 PM

06-11-2010, 09:40 PM
doors are done will get them on sunday and post new pics and on sunday i will be able to get my jasper to finish off my front baffle with the 10inch port in it!

more pics coming SOON!!

06-12-2010, 01:57 AM
check your pm's man

06-12-2010, 02:20 AM
Looks good man I like the box design, it's different & is always good to try different things.

06-13-2010, 11:33 PM
So i got back from my Vacation out in Calgary Alberta this week! and I also got my door panels back from Mike! (Jalat) and he did a great job! to see them in person is awesome!!

at any rate enjoy the pics and let me know what you guys think of them!

06-18-2010, 09:43 PM
well i thought i would let everyone know what is going on now! lol!

so my install is 100% complete and let me tell you the car sounds awesome and it pounds! although it is about 2-3db louder with double the cone and power! which is cool with me.

so now here is what is up i have both of my amps sold so they will be coming out and being replaced with 2-saz2500!! lol i can't wait! so with the new amps they will be 5krms at 2ohm!

as for right now everything works 100% and i can't complain other then i don't think grand am's are built for db's.... lol they are crap to work on and a pain to get loud! as my other buddy is learning now as he is trying 6k and numerous box setup designs and still they aren't working out to be that much louder! he also doesn't work 65-70hours a week as i do! which is why this **** build is taking so darn long lol

at any rate is done and i like it that is about all i can say! future upgrades will be 16volts, better car... and all those other fancy things!

so here are the final pics as of right now!

08-07-2010, 05:45 PM
update time!!

so here is what i have found out!

A) grand-ams and db's don't mix well
B) my peak is at about 41-42hz
C) I was able to get a 146.98 on a burp (i didn't break 147 but i came really close), not what i was hoping for
D) my gains still aren't set a 100% correctly (i will figure it out one time ;0 )
E) my box flexes like a mother
F) time for a new box! (6th order will be the next one to go in)
