View Full Version : Durango build (BTL18, Z1, SS, Eclipse, dual alts etc...)

Some may remember on St. Patrick's day my Cadillac was totaled. Well, I was saving up some money for a new vehicle and had about $2K for a down payment and decided to say **** that car payments and just buy something out right. So, I found a 2000 Dodge Durango Sport for $2500, ended up getting it for $2K because the guy needed some money pretty quick for some business expenses (he owns a little construction company). Anyways, It already has an alarm/keyless entry so that was helpful, It is a Texas car, not a single spot of rust! it is AMAZING imo, being form Iowa, even the 2009 cars around here are rusting up under neath...

ANYWAYS, build looks like this:

head unit:
Eclipse CD8445

sub stage:
18" Fi BTL, fully loaded, universal, D2
Digital Designs Z1
8.5ft^3net @ 33hz daily and 40hz for comps
single 12" or two 8" aeros (need to research this more)

SoundStream TRC.6n's (two sets)
SoundStream RUB600.4

4 runs of 1/0
2) C&D 350's
100A stock alternator
300A Ohio Generator alt

I decided to start the thread before the build :suicide: so for now, here are some pics of the equipment and the vehicle.

Also messing with the vehicle itself too... ordered this stuff for it:

these wheels (sticking with 15" since the thing has BRAND NEW tires, and they are only $40/ea plus I don't have the fourth stock rim and they want $150~ at junkyards for one, also missing a center cap) http://www.atozfabrication.com/store/image.php?type=P&id=16366

Cragar Soft 8's, nice. Thank God you got rid of those gay *** starfish wheels.

Should have left the factory tails imo.

yeah, I was thinking about just getting them tinted or buying those covers but both of those options where like $100+ so I figured WTF. I just think it will look pretty nice with the black wheels and black head/tail lights.

As for the build, dropped the O.G. alternator off to have it converted to a single wire unit so I don't have to mess with any wiring. I should be dropping the vehicle off at TAB Fabrication sometime toward the end of this week so they can do the alternator brackets and everything. Going to start running the new speaker wire (14awg) for the mids and get the RUB600.4 all mounted up. I will probably start figuring out the layout of my box this weekend as well. Not really going to start anything too crazy until I get my deck and all of my wire which should be here by this weekend.

no major progress... Just ordered 50' of red Knu, 30' of blue Knu (didn't have black 1/0 ) , 40 2/0 copper lugs, 4ft of 1" red heat shrink tubing and 4ft of black 1" heat shrink tubing.

I got my CD player yesterday and will hopefully be installing it today! everything should be here next weekend to start all of the wiring, I should also be able to get the box built and then I will just have to make some aeros...

nah... I think I will like those lights...

Also ordered 50' of red wire loom, split conduit stuff... I am just planning to ground to the frame instead of doing a bunch of negative runs too. I am sure the negative runs are probably "better" but I ran only a SINGLE 1/0 chassis ground in the cadillac (sub frame car and it was bolted to a pinch weld) with NO issues at all. Along with the Big3 I will just be doing a few runs to the frame from the front battery and then a few runs from the frame to the rear batteries.

Looks like it's going to be a nice build.

Looks like a fun build. How many miles on the durango? You going to have to do any mechanical improvements? And where are you getting the wheels from? I like.

quite a bit of mileage because they drove it from Texas to Iowa and back once a month. something like 160K but it is literally almost all highway miles, they bought it specifically to make the trip up here and back to Texas. No real mechanical improvements planned, I put a cold air intake on there but just to make room for the second alternator, other than that just the basic tune-up and oil change. Wheel I am getting from Summit Racing, the four Cragar rims, US Wheels center caps (same exact thing as the cragar centers but they don't say CRAGAR on them so they are like 1/4 the price LOL) and lug nuts for like $200 shipped to my door.

Sadly, I didn't really get any "picture worthy" stuff done today. I ran all of my new speaker wire for the mids, ran all of my RCA's, mounted my mids amp and got ti all wired up except for the power and ground because I have to get all of my power wire runs back to the batteries first. I am hoping I can get that done this weekend, I shouldn't have a problem getting it done. Other than that, I made my "distribution bars" and they turned out pretty good IMO, I need to find some copper washers but I am not sure it is even worth it since the bars themselves are aluminum... I will probably buy copper sometime but it was literally 10x as much as the aluminum and it was going to take longer to get and I was in a hurry, they had the aluminum in stock...

I have about a foot left which I will be cutting in half ans doing pretty much the same thing on that other C&D sitting off to the side in the second picture. That will be going under the hood though. My dial alternator setup should be good to go about mid week as well. The only thing I am at all concerned about is my 12" aero port which Shane won't have for me until I get to the competition on the 7th. Hopefully everything goes smooth and I can put up some good numbers.

let's see more

wish I had more to show! Not much time to work on this thing with the crappy weather and a three year old kid who's birthday was Thursday. Still putting toys together and all that fun stuff! I THINK I am going to have access to a car lift tomorrow which means I can do my power runs, hopefully that all works out. Otherwise, I will post pictures as I get the **** done. This does have to be finished by friday the 7th though since there is a comp that day...

05-01-2010, 07:03 PM
Where is the comp on the 7th at?

Also... there has been a slight change in plans sadly... my window line is 18", and the bellmouth on the 12" port is 16", and if the sub is above the window line that puts me in the "wall" class, so I am going to have to run 6" or 8" ports instead and I think I will end up with about 7-7.5 ft^3 instead of the 8.5ft^3 I had originally planned. I have been working with some pretty serious SPL competitors and, well, to be honest, I am listening to everything they say as one of them is hitting like 153+ in his trunk with a single 15" and like 3Kw so I think he knows his **** pretty well...

05-01-2010, 10:09 PM
got the under hood bussbars pretty much done... I have to have a buddy weld a tab on them so I can actually screw them to the battery but that is pretty much exactly how they will sit when finished, just raised up like 1/4" or so. Also, that extra will not be hanging over, that is going to be cut off and used as the tabs for mounting, I am just going to let him do all of that because I am doing other stuff...

really? I have never had an issue with it. In all honesty though, I do leave it in the sun for a while before i work with it. that jacket does get stiff as fawk when it is cold but so does all wire... Not the best stuff but for the price, I love it :)

Ah, cool. I'm in Cedar Rapids for a couple more weeks. Wish I had my new Escape finished so I could compete and see what I'll do on the TL but sit ain't anywhere near done. I'll still probably try and come down and check it out.

Got my power runs done today and installed a system in my buddies Jeep (MOFO 15" and a BB1400.1) the thing actually slams pretty dang good! impressive for a $150 subwoofer in my opinion. we played a 25hz tone and we thought that thing was going to shake apart. It is in my old cadillac box, 4.5ft^3 @ 40hz sub/port back.

ANYWAYS, on with my build...

got the dual alternator kit all on and what not... Beusings Iowa Generator went ahead and check it out for me while I was down there and I was getting about 225A at engine idle (700rpm) with the pair :) Only "problem" is my O.G. alt. has a 6-groove pulley and the dodge has a 7-groove setup, I ordered a new pulley but it won't be here in time for the comp. on friday so I just put a 6-rib belt on it for now, it's working fine so far. Also for some reason they cut my bracket out of 1/8" and not 1/4" like they where suppose to but it is working OK, has a small amount of "wobble" to it but nothing major. It will get me by until after the comp. at least, then I will worry about it. Box is obviously not done, I have to put the second baffle on top and it will be a flush mount setup and cut a hole for the aero ports baffle. The box ended up being 7.3ft^3 net which is fine for me, I had to keep it under the window line and everything so I didn't have a tone of choice.

3 - 6" aeros mounted on a removable baffle for easy change out. As shown they are around 38hz~, I have some small center pieces to add for a 33hz~ tune as well...

my box ended up a tad bigger than expected because I planned to use 1" MDF but no one around here has it so I was stuck with .75", I am right at 7.25ft^3 with 85"^2~ port area....

dont worry about the extra groove in the pulley, as long as the alt isnt crooked and the belt walks you are fine

Yay... my thread works again!

I got this all "finished up" and hit a competition tonight. Put up a 148.8 over and over again. from 2800-4700 watts it didn't matter, I got the same 148.8 every time... Box is 7.25ft^3 net and is tuned to about 34hz, didn't have time to switch to the 38hx tune like I wanted to. 1st place in Basic 4, second place in Advanced No Wall and 2nd place in Local 3. That was just drop in, no time to test or anything at all, brand new subwoofer, box needs some work still. I guarantee a 150dB is within reach rather easily. The port baffle was leaking pretty good because I didn't have time to make any kind of seal so it was just would on wood, 28.5" x 8.5" held in with 8 drywall screw because that is what was on hand at the competition when I was finishing the install.

I found it weird that almost 3Kw difference in power made NO difference what so ever on the meter.... any ideas?

Also, picked up some rims today, nothing huge, just some 20"s with Kumhos for $400, I have the center caps, just aren't on in the picture...

Not much left to do. I plan to buy or make a nice thick (1/4"+) or so gasket for the port baffle and I am going to put some studs (probably 1/4" x 3" bolts) coming out of the box to hold the port baffle. Also going to do some 45*s in the corners and resin the inside, I am sure some sound deadener is in my future as well, **** was flexing quite a bit. Don't know if I ever mentioned I was peaking at like 36hz or so...

I also changed things up a little on the wiring. Instead of doing my grounds to the frame I did two runs to the front battery to the rears and then one short run from the rears to the frame. Also did a short run from the front to the frame and then of course a couple from the engine block to the frame. I never dipped below 14.3 at full tilt for 30 seconds straight! Gotta love overkill on the electrical!

Lastly, I blew up my buddies junk :( After the show I gave the dude $5 to let me meter his Jeep (BB1400.1 and a MOFO 15") and that ***** cooked in like 10 seconds on about 1200 watts during an 80hz-30hz sweep. Tried convincing him to get a decent sub but there is no convincing some people when they see "3000 watt subwoofer for only $150".... It's still under warranty (only about a week of use on it) but still a POS. For $50~ more he could have had a nice sub but he's a dumb ***...

LOVE your box setup! cant wait to see this setup improve! Str8 SICKNESS!

Thanks! I am about 1/2" below the window line, I had one guy "contest" saying it was above the window line and therefore a "wall". He was wrong obviously, that is the reason I ended up with 7.25ft^ net instead of the 8.5ft^3 I planned. I am happy with it though! I see 150's easily in my very near future! Also made me feel pretty good is that Steve (the guy who runs the Midwest SPL shows) told me it was one of the nicest battery installs he has ever seen.
