View Full Version : Two 18s, 300 amp alt, 2 batts, big 3, REBUILD!

04-19-2010, 02:41 AM
I'm rebuilding my 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis LS. Ive had the 18s installed previously but blew the Kicker 2500.1 that was on em so this is round 2.

Equipment going in...
300 Amp Excessive Amperage Alternator
Big 3 in Shok Industries 1/0
35 ft of Shok Industries ran throughout
Optima Red Top under the hood
C&D 134AH in trunk
2 18" Fi BLs
NEW Kicker 2500.1
75ft2 sound deadening

I recently wrapped the 10.5ft3 enclosure in tan carpet and sprayed the port white to match the car. I wired the new Kicker 2500.1 up and got the Optima in under the hood. 75ft2 of sound deadening to the trunk floor/wall/lid. The big 3 and Shok 1/0 gauge will be ran as soon as i get to it as well as the install on the alternator and battery/battery rack.

Heres what I have so far...

The trunk getting started on with sound deadening...its a big trunk and wasnt much fun

almost done

box ready to be wrapped and painted
10.5 cubes tuned to 32hz

port being painted

box finished and ready to be wired up again

wired up and snug in the trunk after finished sound deadening. Im planning on changing the location of the amp from behind the box to the very front so its visible. Ill change it when i get the battery rack finished up.

EA 300 amp alt and my trusty swishas

Shok Industries 1/0 gauge goin in throughout and in Big 3

Pics of the C&D and Optima as well as future progress will be up just as soon as they get done...

04-19-2010, 10:59 AM
ya im actually gettin some work done now!

The air freshner was because i was laying the primer and painting the port....IN MY KITCHEN and that was my long shot at trying to smell something besides fumes. Basically i just inhaled great smelling fumes.

04-19-2010, 11:04 AM
What kind of sound deadening was that?

04-19-2010, 11:15 AM
RV roofing repair mat. I love it...this is the 2nd vehicle ive had that i used it in. it hushed up some the smaller rattles and noticed a lot less road noise comin from the trunk as well... did the whole trunk for i think $30-45 range.

04-19-2010, 11:27 AM
so you keeping the bl ? or are they still for sale

04-19-2010, 11:47 AM

04-19-2010, 03:08 PM

04-19-2010, 04:22 PM
....like a cadillac in a dog house!!!

05-04-2010, 03:00 PM
Fi BL 18z in box with kicker 2500.1 SOLD so goin with a new setup hopefully louder then the 18z (144.4dB on TL on music)

Equipment goin in as of now

EA 300 amp Alt
Shok 1/0 gauge and Big 3
Stinger digital voltmeter
C&D 134ah

Still unsure of what substage goin with but open for ideas...stay tuned for progress

05-04-2010, 03:03 PM
You could probably do better with a pair of 15s in the right airspace. 18s were tight but I think they were being smothered.

05-04-2010, 03:32 PM
What kind of power you going to have on tap? What you trying to hit on the TL?

05-06-2010, 01:11 AM
Ya i just wanted to do it to say i did it...and it did sound pretty bad *** at the same time...but i think im gonna try to shoot for 147ish on TL i was lookin around 2500-3500 rms range

05-06-2010, 02:01 PM
4 12s would be another option. I think you would have a better chance doing 147+ with that since there is more cone area than 2 15s. I mean, 15s would most likely beat out the 2 18s but I think only by a db or two on that power.

05-06-2010, 02:22 PM
A sundown 3500d would be good for your future set up ;)

05-06-2010, 10:59 PM
i think im pretty set on what im goin with but not sure...well just say 4 15s

05-07-2010, 02:42 AM
I hope not in the trunk. lol

05-07-2010, 11:54 AM
yup...in the trunk...debating right now on 3 fi ssd 15s on GP3000 or 4 sdc2.5 on aq2200d

05-07-2010, 11:24 PM
Those 15s are going to be in way too small of an enclosure. I just don't see 4 15s in ~10 cu ft working out too well. I barely have enough airspace for my 2 SDC2.5 15s, let alone 4! Why not go with some subwoofers you can put in the correct size enclosure? I bet you will get better results that way.

05-07-2010, 11:24 PM
Shok 0/1 ground

knu triple 1/0 batt terminals on new red top.

just a little overlook of engine no big 3 or alt in yet

all wires through

The C&D and rack are next

Nice build.

05-08-2010, 08:34 PM
thank you...im also adding over 200 leds throughout the car just for show

05-08-2010, 08:47 PM
What kind of airspace do you have in mind for 4 15s?

05-08-2010, 09:41 PM
Hey so i got a 97 grand marquis and i found out the hard way that the tank is right under the trunk.
how did you still make your amp and (capacitors??) secure? where did you screw it down to or what?

05-09-2010, 06:15 PM
I mounted my amps on a piece of mdf and then used velcro to secure that to the carpet. It doesn't move around at all so it worked out pretty well. You can get velcro strips at home depot for a few bucks.

05-09-2010, 10:56 PM
just got the new equipment im gonna be running this summer

Crunch GP3000
3 Fi SSD 15s
~10.5ft3 33-37hz

if anyones got any ideas or designs for a triple 15" enclosure fill me in

05-11-2010, 12:18 AM
all sound deadoned ...the 15s will fit nicely right theerrrr

the c&d ill be putting in

painted the inside of the trunk...what wasnt coverd in sound deadoning... for two reasons 1. distracts the eye fromt he eyes sore of foam and baremetal and 2. when all the leds are installed in trunk...the stuff i dont want to see is already painted flat black

more to come...

05-11-2010, 09:38 AM
Why didn't you fully "deaden" the trunk lid?

I need to check out that RV repair stuff and see if it would be any good or not.

05-11-2010, 12:14 PM
well i bought 75sq ft thinkin it would be more then enough for the whole trunk...however after 75 you see how much left i need for the lid so it will be finished today as well...bout to make a little progress on my vehicle if i can get some of these customers cars out of the way.

as far as the rv roof repair...i like it...i can tell a reduction in road noise as well as some vibrations being reduced completely...this is the 3rd car i believe i ve used it on

05-11-2010, 12:20 PM
10cubes net in a trunk. wow!!!

05-11-2010, 05:12 PM

Is this what you used for deadener?

exactly what i used...almost 4 rolls so thats only like 65$

mind i used the same amount in my trunk as i did in an suv from the back doors to the hatch

05-11-2010, 08:12 PM
Yea I have a Crown Vic so I know its gonna take a lot to do the whole thing.

05-12-2010, 05:01 AM
Check out some real sound deadening from SDS.

Sound Deadener Showdown - Your Source for Sound Deadening Products and Information (http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi)

That stuff from Home Depot is pure asphalt and not even meant to be a deadener.

05-12-2010, 11:29 AM
i like what i got...and INKFX thats the 3rd time you questioned or dissed something in my car...idk if someone pissed in your cheerios or just hatin on what I GOT...but you continuously do that **** when your running what? 2 15z on a 1200 watt amp?!?! lemme guess you ve got some led tire stems n hubcap spinners too ...This is my thread dont diss what i got or what i choose to use for whatever reason. before you come at me like that i just say GET ON MY LEVEL HO!!!

05-12-2010, 02:45 PM
Thing is, the CLD tiles are cheap and will be much more effective. "... cover 25% at the center of flat panels and you are done controlling resonance...". I'm going to order some for my doors and trunk floor when I get my paycheck. I'll see how it compares to the Second Skin.

6x10 CLD Tiles

1-9 $2.65 each
0-39 $2.45 each
40+ $2.25 each

05-13-2010, 01:28 AM
battery box that will be bolted to trunk wall

bolted in test fitting battery

final panel on and tight

batt all wired up

battery had been sittin since it was bought a while back

with the car on

...i got the switch and voltmeter in today but forgot to get pics. Ill be putting the leds on the interior tomorrow as well.
Still dont know whether i should try and squeeze the Fi's in a ported box or just go with a big sealed box. maybe some glass?

05-27-2010, 03:03 PM
Any updates?

06-04-2010, 04:19 PM
hopefully starting the box build soon...possibly this weekend

08-02-2010, 08:11 PM
new box started last week. its roughly 10 cubes between 3 chambers all fiberglass top. portswill be tuned to 32 hz.
ive got the second layerof glass done already will havepics up soon.

08-18-2010, 06:59 PM
Puttin the base together

Rings in

The angles were crazy on this was hard to get 3 15" subs in a 43" frame so thats why i wrapped each chamber individually

Layin resin on the fleece

First layer of mat

Second layer of mat

still have to drop ports in and more layers and tonnnss of sandin...anyways while im buildin this i have 2 of the ssds in a 6ft3 box tuned to 30hz on the gp3000 and im impressed...cant wait to get this done

08-18-2010, 07:12 PM
looks like you got skillz

08-19-2010, 05:29 AM
heard 3 subs are bad.....
