View Full Version : KDC-x993 Harddrive compatability issues?

Does anybody know of a USB harddrive that is compatible with the kdc-x993?
Ive tried a western digital passport 500g but the HU wouldnt recognize it. i assume this is because it doesnt act simply like flash memory, but instead it has softwhere that has to be initialized by the "computer" (in this case, the HU) and that the x993 was incapable of doing such. any input would be really helpful. i dont wanna drop a ****ton of money on a new ipod and im getting tired of switching between four 16g flash drives.

Very likely the HU does not recognize the partition type on the HD. Most of these HU only recognize FAT32. Try re-partitioning your HD into smaller clusters of say 100 GB partitions and format them as FAT32. This way your HU will see your HD as 5 drives of 100 GB in size each. You could also just format the whole 500 GB as FAT32. But I have found that smaller size partitions are more efficient (faster, etc.)

Hmm IIRC my kenwood 993 did read the 500gb my passoport essentials 500gb that I have. I know it read my 32gb flash drive no problemo

its more than likely the type of partition the HDD has. It should read FAT32 no problem. I want to get the KDC-994 cause of the rear usb it has for the mass media storage. I have a few 1 TB hdds and i was gonna use one for the deck when i get it but i have to have a power inverter in my car to power the HDD because usb only powers like 5V and it takes more then that to power it.

USB only powers 5MA, not volts.
