Hi everybody!
I started putting the stereo in this car about 5 weeks ago. I photographed some of what I did to get it to the point it is today. This car has it's first show today (March 20th).

I brought her home in December.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/12-19-09_2039.jpg

Picked up an engine upgrade. It's a complete DOHC B18, two transmissions, half shafts and everything to mount it in a rex for $200. I'm going to run the D16 SOHC that has already been swapped into this car until I get more time an better weather since I don't have a garage...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/01-02-10_1338.jpg

Equip for the rex... I'm going to start with the RD D5 powering 2 Kicker 10" L7s for starters, but will have 4x 10L7s by my second show in April.

It's a little harder to get a Group 31 battery under the hood than I expected. There's a great thread on Termpro that shows tons of pics of them. All I got to say is that anyone who lays a battery flat did a little cutting...

This is what it looked like when I popped the hood yesterday.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1681.jpg

I strung wires through an existing hole in the firewall that I still need to work on getting sealed up tight. I then started scrapping stock wiring and the stock headlight. I then used a hammer to make a little more room for the G31.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1683.jpg

A little sweet talking and some flexible wire got the battery in with the aftermarket headlight (which sticks back further that the stock making this project much more of a pain). The air filter fit just right with a little smashing action going on.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1685.jpg

Using a cutoff wheel to open up the seat mount brace lets the wires lay nicely through it. I'm only doing 2 positive and 2 negative for now since its what I had laying around and I'm on a really tight budget right now. The positive is Kicker Hyperflex and the negative is KnuKonceptz Kollosus Flex. Both are great wire.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1687.jpg

I put down a little Second Skin Dampener Pro that I had laying around, but I don't know if I really want to share pics of that. I haven't done anything against the rules in case you were wondering. :) I've only put deadener where I know it will help for now and I have some SPL Sludge I still need to lay down. I'll test, apply, test, apply (or remove), ect as I get the stereo making noise.

Long work hours has me waaay behind schedule on getting this thing done.

I ran to Walmart this morning and dropped $160 on a Pioneer deck that would play off a USB port and iPod and has the pause feature.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1691.jpg

I never even gave this deck a fair shake. It's a JVC CD player with no pause or USB. Out with the bad...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1692.jpg

In with the good...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1693.jpg

I ran my RCAs and sensing wire the same route my 1/0 is run. There is a PAC LC-1 in line on the RCAs. I then laid the carpet back down and installed the seats.
I installed my Batcap 800 and RD D5 in the back and then made this wonderful sealed box...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1694.jpg

It's a vented subwoofer enclosure that someone left in my back yard. I slapped a board over the port and inverted an RD Alpha Max 12 (for easy wiring purposes). With everything in, I keyed up a 100hz - 20hz sweep and pulled out the TermLab... and then couldn't get the termlab working .

soundstreamer
03-20-2010, 11:03 AM
I got my TL working. It's a USB Termlab. My comps USB ports don't put out enough power to run a TL. I bought a powered USB hub and it started working instantly. It just ***** that I have to have 2 things plugged in like I would have with a AC powered unit... oh well.

All tests were run with flat HU settings, maxed out gains on the amp, and volume 35 oh the HU (~ half volume)

My car has two strong peaks. I tested multiple times with sweeps and then went straight to the tones in the area to pinpoint my peaks.
65hz - 131.8 db
47hz - 133.1 db

I'm going to flip the box and see if anything changes, the I'm building for 65. Something tells me with efficiency, power, and port helping, its going to to be the note for me. I'll use 47 for my streetbeating until I can find a decent 65 hz song..

I don't care much for the stock storage space behind the seats. It is flimsy, would never support the boxes I plan to be moving in and out, and doesn't fit right with the 4 runs of 1/0 on one side. With the storage space removed, there is a chance I'll damage the wiring of the fuel pump or the amplifier while moving enclosures.

Here's a pic of the stock storage unit. Right behind it is a couple of the "T"s I made for the base.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1696.jpg

I placed them side by side and measured everything twice
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1697.jpg

There are braces supporting the front 45 degree board that don't show in this pic. I think it turned out pretty good for my first try... not to mention I was racing the storm clouds.

With a little trimming and squeezing:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1700.jpg

Not a perfect fit, but a little duct tape and sound deadening, it'll do the job I need it to. I'll do a little more trimming before final install even though it passes the string test now...barely.

I made some square holes. I've never owned speakers I didn't make the baffle with a Jasper jig...

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1703.jpg

This if basically my jig now and I'll make every other baffle with a flush trim on my router. :) I don't like measuring...

I made two boxes for testing. Both were made for 2x L7s. One is 1.4 cubes after sub displacement tuned to 61hz, the other is 2.2 cubes tuned to 43hz.

The simple insides of the boxes... not much room for bracing:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1706.jpg

This is what the flares look like from the inside. I had to do this so I can test the flares on multiple boxes without tearing them apart to get my flares back.:

My new biggest problem... stock alternator blues:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1715.jpg

I was in charge of watching the kids this day so my work was pretty well spaced out and I didn't get near as much done as I should have.

I dropped in my box for 2x L7s tuned to 43hz and got a best of 147.2 @ 47hz. I played a 65hz tone and did a 143.
I put my original test box from the last post and started moving things. I had a charger on the batts during all the testing so voltage wouldn't be a huge issue today. I made a couple of big changes and started with:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/03-14-10_1905.jpg

A few more tweaks and turns and I made it to 152 @ 65hz:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/03-14-10_1931.jpg

It was dark at that point. I think I can get a bit more out of this box and have a bunch of stuff to test on the car. I will probably take it to the show on Saturday with this setup.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/03-17-10_1810.jpg

I did manage to move my ports to the inside of the box and got another 10th...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1721.jpg

I'm hearing now that some loud people aren't going to be showing up at the show today. :( I was going to get all four 10L7s into my box and see if I could do better, but I'm just going to do SB1 this round.

That was my first box I built for it. I just needed a box i could try forward, sideways, upside down and back. I'll try a little of everything this year to find a loud trick... and port forward is one of the things I'll try.

I won 3 first place trophies today.

151.9 in stock 0-600
151.8 in super stock 0-600
150.9 in streetbeat 1

I did a 152.2 in the driveway by putting the mic on the drivers side floorboard, but the show's mic was .4 down on everybody so i was happy with what I got at the show. My streetbeat run was the loudest of everyone that did streetbeat except the streetbeat 5 winner who did a 159.6.

Its better than internal. Look at it this way. If you have an internal aero then you have a lot of dead space around the port opening that air can sit untill it is pushed out. If your port drops down from the top 12" then 11.9" down is all area that air can sit. With external, all of your air is forced through those ports because they are flush inside. does that make sense ?

pawn man
03-23-2010, 10:20 PM
yes, 152 is a good score for that power. i am running a lot more power than what is allowed in that class. when i ran usaci i ran the 1800 watt pro class w/ 2 40.1s. i am running 4 40.1s now.

mbrooky
03-23-2010, 10:22 PM
Forgive me for not being familiar with Usaci, but is a 152 a good score for 0-600?

yes...considering you have to use and amp rated under 600wrms @ 4ohm at 14.4v with only 1 extra batt...no modifications and has to be under window line and back seats have to be able to fold up and i believe you have to have stock alt as well...and a few other rules....but basically everything has to be able to be put in stock config...and then for 0-600 pro stock you can use two batts in the rear...iirc

so basically it's a competition to find an amp that will wire down the lowest and still rated at 600wrms@4ohm. like the d5 he is using or a cactus pf600, treo 4.1, couple of the mmats amps and db drive pd2000s are popular in this class...i think the record is a crx with 7-9 l7s on a cactus pf600 that hit 160+ in 08 i think

Not even close to what I need it to be. I am just starting this build and built a box that could be moved around easily. It was my first box and I have minimal time into testing (probably about 15 burps total). By the end of the season I hope to be much closer to, if not @ 160db on burps.

i say do the 2510s cuz they will handle more power than the l7's. 2500-4k all day > L7-3k pushing limits. You could step up to the 3500 series 5k all day you could throw at the 4 daily.

im loving the build

Maybe on the way to Finals... I'm hoping for Dallas instead of Shreveport, but I'd be close by either way. If its in Oklahoma again you might have to come up a little ways to see it. :)

First I chopped the back off my 43hz test box...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1833.jpg

Cut a couple more holes.
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1840.jpg

I made a slot port 4.5" x 20.5" and new back plate that would tune me to 61hz on my 2.2 cuft box
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1841.jpg

I then realized i should test fit... it's close
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/04-24-10_0859.jpg

Loaded up some square subs and on the first burp...
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/04-24-10_1252.jpg

I then added a bunch of sound deadener, but haven't taken a pic yet... I need to remove some :)

Don't mind the mess, I just threw everything in the car before loading on the trailer to come home.

Here's a front view of the box as it sits now:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1884.jpg

Here's a look at how I applied a little Second Skin Damplifier Pro. I covered the tail lights, about 50% of the outside skin, and covered the holes on the side inner skin. I now know I could gain a bit by not covering the holes... I need to test, remove, test, remove, test, put back on as needed. I'm almost out of Damplifier, so Ant will be getting a call sometime soon. I did do a 154.4 at home after adding the Damplifier, which is a .9 db gain from having just Gorilla Tape over the tail light holes...

The key to louds crx's is duct tape on the ports and wiring running through the ports ;)
and I see you started the right way. Good job.

I've done some work, but not much... I was in the hospital one day, by the time I recovered from that I started having major tooth pain and I'm just now recovering from loosing it. I'll get some pics up later tonight or tomorrow. The box is done, but not in the car yet. :(

I put a little resin on the inside and outside of the box. I smoothed out the inside a lot (I've got more to do), and the outside a little. I then painted the box flat black.
Front view:

back view:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/IMG_1893.jpg

I then inserted my ports. They are 8" ID schedule 80 PVC. I cut them to length, then rounded over the ends. They were glued in with industrial strength liquid nail, topped with titebond, then I added a little more resin to the inside up to the ports... This batch was a really hot mix so it didn't turn out too great (Nothing a little sanding and waxing won't fix)

Hunter and I got the box in the car, but I'm waiting on my TL to get here at the moment. I did burp it once, and it's not very loud...

I managed to do 154.4 @ 63hz Outlaw (I compete USACi), 150.8 sealed on the glass, and 151.8 driver's door open on the glass.
I got a little side tracked building a port reducer for a friend's box. He has 4x DD3512s powered by 2x DDM3s:

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/05-22-10_1540.jpg

After playing with his stereo for awhile, I burped a 154.2:

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/05-22-10_1543.jpg

(Sorry about the pathetic photography...) Then my fun came to a quick halt...

I'm done for the day... to be continued.

I tried removing the deadener over the holes on the side panels and lost about .4 db. I re-covered them and got it back. Now all I have is ~10 SPL tiles so I'm going to have to be real careful where I put them to maximize any gains.

I'm also getting my windows tinted next week and making it so they'll roll up and down better. :)

booo popo *****....yeah i just did a sb1 run and did a 144.5 with a 3.5cuft box tuned to 36hz. next show will be a 2.3-2.5cuft box at 50hz....hopefully will get louder:crap:

any more work done to it?

All I did this week is get the windows repaired (neither would roll down), inside door handles replaced (much easier to get out without outside help now), and get the windows tinted (which makes the car look much better):
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/05-28-10_1852.jpg

Today I went and dropped off a couple of D5s to what looks like it's going to be a loud trunk car (USACi 0-1000 trunk):
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/05-29-10_1151.jpg

This is my favorite way to setup trunk cars... subs and ports forward:
http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv172/nowayhoser/05-29-10_1219.jpg

I'm going to do a little more work on the doors before I button up the door panels tomorrow.
