Well this is very exciting for me. Thursday I received a message asking if I would like to do an install on a 2001 BMW 740. After talking to him for two days I took a ride up to him on Saturday to meet him and the car. After him reading about me and my work he had no problem handing the keys over to take it home. He left Monday for a 2 week vacation.

Enough with that story, time to talk about the install.

Goodies include

Q 450.4 - Image Dynamics 4-Channel 450 Watt Amplifier

Q 1200.1 - Image Dynamics 1-Channel 1200 Watt Amplifier

IDQ12V2.D2 - Image Dynamics 12" IDQ $149.99 x 2

130CVX - Focal 5.25 " Polyglass Coaxial Speakers

MTX re-Q Signal Processor

JL CleanSweep CL441DSP

Stinger Pro 3 Series 6 Channel

Head rest tv's

Kicker 12 Guage S series 150ft

Kicker PKD1

FOCAL 165VR3 3 WAY COMPONENT SET

Dynamat 10455 Xtreme Bulk Pack 9 Sheets

This install will very much help my skills and expand them to fiberglass and custom boxes.

I will update this thread daily with new work and pictures.

sounds like a fun build.
take tons of pics. one question though.. how are you going to incorporate the jl cleansweep and the mtx req? PLEASE let me know how your mtx req install goes. i did an install on my lexus with a req and wow. ive had quite a few problems, i managed to fix all of them, except the engine noise that i get from it!!!!!!!!!! let me know how your install with the req goes.

As of right now I am talking to a few people on the BMW forum. Some tell me that I can just use the preouts of the head unit and wire them up to female rca ends and run them to the new amps. Others are saying that the JL is needed. I will let you know.

I will make sure to take plenty of pictures.

any updates on this build?
anyways, thanks, yeah let me know.
and i think you'll definitely need teh req or the cleansweep if your going to stick with stock hu. i would definitely do it. those femal rcas wont give you as good clean sound as the processor will. i thought about it also before i got my req. jl makes some of those female ends that connect to the speaker leds and conver it into rca outputs, but they'll give you much lower quality sound (or from the research that i did, thtas what i found out).

Today i worked on the kick panels. The reason for this is there is no stock location for a 6.5 inch speaker in the door. Also this will help imaging a bit by having them facing the drive and passenger.

Drilled holes to help the fiberglass hold to the stock panel.

While that was curing I took off the door panel to take a look at the mid and tweeters.

The owner said that the speakers were upgraded but he did not know what they were. All that was upgraded was the tweeter.

bigaudiofanatic
03-10-2010, 07:35 AM
The factory head unit outputs a pre out signal. One that is clean enough to be used for new amps. All that is needed is to use those wires and wire in rca female connectors and than run them to your new amps. The only pain is finding those wires. The bmw amp outputs 12 channels of audio "I believe that is what I read" so even with a JL clean sweep you would still not be able to get a full pass signal from any of the wires.

x2 on router w/ circle jig. That baffle/ring looks like shizzle.

Will the mids have a grill to protect them?

Yes to enough air space, there will be a grill used to protect the mids from damage.

Well I am learning as I go. As I said in the beginning of the thread. This is my first time doing a false floor and first time fiber glassing. I think for being the first time it is coming along well. The fans have not been mounted yet they were there to give people an idea of where they will be. I will probably flush them but not sure yet. Everything still have to be wrapped, the plexi glass has to be installed as well as the neons.

How so from what they are now? I would think a layer of fleece 2 coats of resin, a layer of mat and resin and than covered with bondo would be enough.

Fleece + resin is brittle. Some people think using thick fleece helps with structure, but it doesn't.

When you said "2 coats of resin", if you mean that you only applied 2 coat of ONLY resin after the fleece... That's a bad idea. Resin by itself is brittle. Resin needs to be soaked up by the fiberglass mat/cloth to add strength/structure. A single layer of fiberglass mat... not enough at all.

Bondo is just body filler and doesn't add strength either. it's just to make it look purdy. unless you used bondo-hair.

You want to make your pods as strong and non-resonant as possible.

bigaudiofanatic
03-21-2010, 05:16 PM
Thats why after the fleece I put a layer of fiberglass matt and resin. But thank you for the heads up.

speedfreak28
03-21-2010, 05:37 PM
take a little constructive criticism, You said yourself this was ur first fiberglass jo, I told you that you couldnt jsut use resin and fleece matthew. if you can knock on those kicks and hear resonace you didnt make them sturdy enough.

bigaudiofanatic
03-21-2010, 05:39 PM
Just tapped them, hard as a rock only resonating I hear is from the opening and a speaker not being there.

speedfreak28
03-21-2010, 05:41 PM
hard yes, sturdy and resonance free, not so much, you should cut the backs and vent them into the area behind the kicks

here to buy
03-21-2010, 05:45 PM
A solid set of kicks with one layer of mat is a contradictory statement.
If the kicks are now finished and fillered, I suggest you go back from the inside of the speaker cutouts and apply as much mat as you can from the inside. It looks like you have gobs of resin just covering the fleece..then you followed it with 1 mat layer.

o. l. t.
03-21-2010, 06:05 PM

Will the trunk be carpeted to match the interior? If so..paint the area surrounding the amps the same color as the rims/silver BMW color and accent with BMW blue led's around the plexi..If done right, that would be ****.

bigaudiofanatic
03-21-2010, 09:19 PM
Yes the trunk floor and box will be covered to match the rest of the trunk. Also planned on plexi and neons as well.

To be honest did not get much done today. Between this morning and having to study for a math test tomorrow coming back from spring break, I got a few things done.

Got the left kick panel started and the right one starting the paining.

Thanks man, I try to the best of my ability. This build has pushed my skills and my experience to way past anything I have perviously done.

Today was cleaning up things, running the dice and ipod cables in the center counsel and a few other things. Tomorrow more cleaning up and working on the left kick panel more. I think I am going to wrap them both in black fabric, for two reasons they will blend in better and they will not get nicked like paint will. Been running the system for the past two days to allow the system to get broken in before tuning. I am waiting for carpet and an adapter to come on friday to finish up the trunk and the dice install.

LOL well in a 80,000 dollar car there is something wrong with rattles.

He was very happy with the car, very impressed with the audio aspect of it as well "as was I". In two weeks he will drop off the kick panels and the door panels for the speakers to get molded into the doors for more foot room.

It is loud and clear for a SQ setup. I was amazed how clear those focals were and would love to have a set.
