Two methods to import and edit AVCHD files in Windows Movie Maker on Windows 7, XP, Vista

As we know, AVCHD, or Audio and Video Compression for High Definition, is a camcorder video format that is designed for Canon HF S11/HF 21, Panasonic AVCHD, or Sony HDR SR 12E AVCHD camcorder use. Generally, AVCHD utilizes MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression codec and Dolby AC-3 audio compression codec. And many AVCHD camcorders record content to removable media such as SDHC, Memory Stick Cards and DVD discs which can be read on Computer directly.

However, the AVCHD files can not be accepted into Windows Movie Maker. Usually when trying to import AVCHD files (MTS or M2TS) to Windows Movie Maker, you would probably encounter the following problems:

“C:\\Documents and Settings\...could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from…"

Or

"Could not be imported. Unspecified error."

The main reason is that Windows Movie Maker can only support video formats like ASF, WMV, AVI, MPG, MPEG, WMA, WAV, etc. Therefore, it can not support AVCHD with MPEG-4 codec. I guess the most immediate concern is the easy way to import AVCHD videos to Windows Movie Maker. Here I will introduce two methods to make it for your reference.

FFDShow (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm)

Usually, if Windows Movie Maker can’t read the AVCHD files, that may be caused by AVCHD codec. Therefore, you can download and install the latest FFDShow MPEG-4 codec to solve the problem. However, lately FFDShow seems to be getting worse and it acts not perfect in Vista sometimes. On the other hand, it increases the risk to foul up your computer with these codec installed.

If you want an alternative tool to import AVCHD files into Windows Movie Maker, the following one can work perfect for you.

MTS/M2TS Converter (http://www.my-video-converter.com/mts_converter/)

Since AVCHD files are not compatible with Windows Movie Maker, you can use a video converter to convert AVCHD files to Windows Movie Maker workable formats like AVI, WMV, ASF, MPEG, etc.

Compared with the first method, using MTS/M2TS Converter has some special advantages: one is that the MTS/M2TS Converter itself adopts large range of codec so that it will not burden on your computer system; the other is that the MTS/M2TS Converter can help you convert MTS/M2TS to any other video or audio format you need, not only for Windows Movie Maker but also for other media devices like iPod, iPhone, PSP, Archos, mobile phone, etc. What you need to do is just to load the AVCHD files into this MTS/M2TS Converter, select the output format as WMV or AVI and start conversion by clicking the “Convert”.

Once the entire conversion task is done, you could directly import the converted files into Windows Movie Maker for editing.

If you have another alternative method about how to import AVCHD files to Windows Movie Maker, just share with us.
