From what I understand it has to do with the coil gap.

a universal sub can be reconed to a different impedance. a non-universal will stay a dual 1 or dual 2 forever.

a universal sub can be reconed to a different impedance. a non-universal will stay a dual 1 or dual 2 forever.

iirc, if it is a dual 2, then that is the same gap size as a universal gap.
