View Full Version : Favorite speakers you have ever heard

Well, I figured I would start a thread where we can post up what our favorite speakers that we have heard are and why.

Mine would be the B&W 802Ds with a JL Fathom f113 sub. I auditioned these at the store I bought my 603s from. The dynamics of this system were just stunning, especially listening to The Wall by Pink Floyd. Everything was so tight and detailed. The image was amazing, not only did you get the left right staging, you had vertical and a depth that I had never heard before. To me this is how a system should sound. If I ever have the money in the near future a pair of these will be in my house.

I don't care who has heard the most exotic or most expensive speakers, what I want to know is what speakers that you have heard sounded the best to you. I still want to hear a pair of these http://www.revelspeakers.com/products/product.asp?product=27

they were definitely the most amazing set of speakers i have ever heard. that was my answer. they are expensive and exotic, but that doesn't make them sound any worse. :D

my Infinity Alpha 50's sound pretty **** good though. i couldn't ask for anything more. i doubt a better set could be found for the $500 i paid for the pair.

My favorite would have to be the 3.6 Maggies. What they lack in absolute dynamics they more than make up for with resolution, harmonic richness, and a total freedom from coloration. I'm a huge fan of dipole speakers. I've heard them on some Mark Levinson monoblocks as well as some Krell goodness. Why I haven't made it a point to buy the more affordable 1.6 version is beyond me.

Yep, the 802s get a nod from me as well. Uberdynamic as you stated. Great authority while retaining their composure. They can be very finicky about room size/placement.

My favorite part about any very nice and high end speaker is the absolute freedom from listening fatigue. You can be sitting there and not think it is that loud, but you turn to talk to the person in the seat next to you and you are literally yelling to talk to each other. That is a great feeling.

I agree. This is precisely the reason for my attraction to dipole ribbon type speakers and the reason I began making my own ribbons.

This is the site that inspires me the most. Warning: There's a lot to read on this site so you might want to bookmark it and go back a few times.

I did sum work on this guys home(a customer of mine) once(huge house in Greenwich, CT) and he kept telling me all about his audio system in his house. So when i finally heard it i was truly blown away, really didn't think that a home audio setup could sound so incredibly clear and create such perfect bass lines. Can't remember what the amps, speakers, subs, etc were but it was $25k+ worth of equipment he was telling me.

Those are what I'm getting soon, the 4Ts and 4CC paired with an 18" AA Havoc in about 12 cubic feet to 14hz.

Those speakers are absolutely incredible. The guy who designed them lives like 15 minutes from me.

Yamaha RX-V800 receiver, Acurus 100x3 amp and a EP2500 on the sub, bridged.

Haven't been super impressed with anything I have heard of Paradigm's line. The Monitor line IMO is extremely over rated, just sounded bad to me. Klipsch definitely sounded better but the horn tweeters are too bright, B&W sounded better for a little more. I haven't had a chance to hear much more, but Paradigm has never once impressed me.

I've yet to really hear a home theater that's impressed me, to be honest...although there's no reason why it can't be done. Dedicated 2-channel setups have impressed me the most :)

Favorite all time?

Nothing beats Tractrix horns, IMO. The AvantGarde stuff is dynamic as hell and fun to listen to...although I'd go DIY before I ever spent that kind of money.

But I wouldn't want just one pair of speakers. Different designs each have their positives and negatives...which is why I'd want examples of each :)

So, I listened to some B & W 80whatevers. Nice, but nothing that moved me to want to dop anywhere near the $4,500 asking price. Then I listened to some Paradigm's, they were alright, but when he said they listed for $1,500 I had little interest in them. I really did not think that they sounded better than the Klipsch RF 62's for $800.

in a home, some snell in-ceilings that we installed in a theater in a house in biloxi that was paired with a psb sub. the in-ceilings sounded like a pair of cabinets right in front of you, they had great left to right imaging, and were very flat on the RTA mic. the sub had just the right amount of low end for the room, was smooth as silk, and hit the lows nicely.

in our recording studio we have a pair of 6.5" reference monitors that are run at about 900 watts per channel and it probably the best sounding pair of speakers ive ever heard. they are perfectly flat on the RTA mic and have enough low end to sound like a pair of 10's are in there too. i guess being in an acoustically correct room helps too though lol

I've never heard any Magnepan Magneplanar speaker, I would love to for sure. I have heard some Martin Logan speakers and thinking back those may have been my favorites, but I was much younger at the time. Favorites... Hmmm....

B&W 800D, 801D with Classe/Bryston/McInstosh (in that order) Amplification.

PMC BB5 or IB2S with Vinatage H||H Electronic MOS-FET amps. Also sound pretty *****en with Bryston.

Dali Euphonia MS5 or event the Helicon 800 MK2. Don't remember the amps. Might have been McIntosh, Cary, or Moon.

Sonus Faber Amati Anniversario is also pretty kick ***.

As is Thiel Audio CS3.7 with Bryston Amplification.

I can't pick 1 favorite because they all have something the others don't. It all depends on what I want to listen and how I want to listen of what I would call the best. My favorite system just so screw around on and play music would be my 700 Series with H||H V800 Amplification, Moon P3 pre-amp, and a Rega turn table.
